- Accepts, rejects, and modifies complex/high-valued Personal Lines new business risks.
- Provides Personal Lines underwriting guidance and expertise to Personal Lines Senior Underwriters on complex Personal Lines underwriting decisions including those involving large values, and seeks Management approval, as necessary.
- Performs the above-described job duties by examining such documents as Personal Lines application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, claims' files, and medical reports to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, age, occupation, accident experience, and value and condition of property.
- Applies extensive Personal Lines product knowledge including, but not limited to, Company Personal Lines underwriting guidelines and policy forms, Insurance Services Office's manuals and forms as well as knowledge of and familiarity with rating processes for all Company Personal Lines product offerings.
- Performs research, analysis, and recommendations for Personal Lines product development and territorial expansion.
- Organizes and analyzes department operations and procedures to maximize workflow efficiencies and creates controls to ensure guidelines and standards are met.
- Works with various vendors to maintain automated underwriting inputs (MVR, CLUE, etc.) Monitors performance of these systems.
- Assists Company actuarial staff with Personal Lines rate filing preparation.
- Assists Marketing Department with Personal Lines rate comparison calculations and summaries associated with new Personal Lines products, rate filings, and book transfer opportunities.
- Analyzes Personal Lines line of business performance and provides summary reports to Management along with Personal Lines product structural or rate changes, as needed.
- Works closely with third party consultants to monitor and refine Personal Lines predictive models.
- Cultivates and repairs agency/company relationships through more frequent communication, intervention, and troubleshooting problems, as directed.
- Travels additionally, as directed, to develop Personal Lines business with agencies who are underperforming or who are not meeting expectations for performance.
- Leads special Personal Lines projects including, but not limited to, developing presentation material and presenting project information, as directed.
- Preparation of reports required by regulatory agencies.
- Oversees/monitors complaints as they affect the department, from agents, insureds, claimants, and the insurance departments of the states in which the Company does business, with appropriate sign off from the Assistant Manager and/or Manager.
- Preparation of Personal Lines underwriting file audits and reporting functions.
- Identifies /researches new underwriting tools and concepts and makes recommendations to Underwriting Management
- Communicates with field representatives, agency personnel, other insurance or inspection companies, or other entities as may be necessary, to obtain further information, quote Personal Lines rates, or explain Company Personal Lines underwriting policies.
- Assists in design of Personal Lines work procedures, preparation of work schedules, and expedition of Personal Lines workflow, as directed. Assists in training and monitors progress of employee development within department.
- Assists in training and/or coordinating the training of cross-departmental personnel, as directed.
- Develops and maintains positive Company/Agency relations which may include agency travel and visitation, and attendance at various conventions/meetings. (May include overnight stays.)
- Travels as required to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the employee's position and to fulfill educational requirements. (May include overnight stays.)

Job Title: Underwriter – Technical Specialist
Department: Personal Lines Underwriting
Reports To: Vice President, Personal Lines
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY
Duties performed at the next technical level above the Personal Lines senior position within the Personal Lines underwriter class. The position is classified as a specialist and may have supervisory responsibilities as assigned. Job content involves complex, specialized, and technically involved Personal Lines work.
Facilitates, accepts, rejects and modifies the underwriting of more complex/high-valued Personal Lines risks. Serves as a resource to other departments within the Company as well as to agency representatives. Recommends Personal Lines risk improvements, as necessary. Assists the Personal Lines manager and/or the assistant manager with Personal Lines workflow and with special projects, as assigned.
Responsible for the research and development of Company analysis, reporting and monitoring of Company underwriting performance. Contributes underwriting content expertise for projects and initiatives.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree, and 8-10 years of related experience and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
The Company may expect the employee to acquire, within a reasonable period of time as established by the Company, the Chartered Property/Casualty Underwriter designation, sponsored by the American Institute for Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters; or the Certificate in General Insurance (INS Series); and/or the Associate in Underwriting (AU) designation; and/or the Associate in Personal Insurance (API), sponsored by the Insurance Institute of America.
The Company may expect the employee to take other courses it deems appropriate to the employee's job duties.
