      Qualifications

      Education: Currently enrolled in High School or GED program || Current pharmacy technician registration by the Ohio State Board of Pharmacy as part of the Ohio Board Approved High School Training Program. Must obtain a certified technician certificate within one year of hire. All technicians must maintain registration and certification throughout their employment with the UC Health Pharmacy Department. || Minimum Required: No experience required. Preferred 1-2 years of equivalent experience

      Responsibilities

      1. PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)

      • Engages in population appropriate communication.
      • Has knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
      • Gives clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
      • Involves family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
      • Identifies any physical limitations of the patient and deploys intervention when necessary.
      • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
      • Interprets population related data and plans care appropriately.
      • Identifies and responds appropriately to different needs resulting from, unique psychological needs or those associated with religious / cultural norms. Performs treatments, administers medication, or operates equipment safely.
      • Recognizes and responds to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.

      2. Procures and distributes medication orders per prescriber request, pharmacist request, or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
      • Accepts new written, faxed, or electronic prescription orders from a prescriber or a prescriber's agent
      • Enters information into and retrieves information from a database or patient profile
      • Prepares and affixes medication labels
      • Counts and pours dangerous drugs into containers prior to dispensing by a pharmacist
      • Prepares non-sterile compounds
      • Prepares intravenous admixtures and other sterile preparations (including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition) safely and accurately using appropriate techniques while under supervision
      • Delivers medications and supplies to patient care and ancillary areas accurately per established schedule

      3. Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and procedures
      • Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing medications and supplies in the pharmacy inventory
      • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration
      • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications
      • Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas within the pharmacy accurately within specified time periods
      • Repackages bulk medications in unit-dose packages safely and accurately per established procedures using appropriate techniques

      4. Contributes to the effective operation of the department
      • Picks up orders, requisitions, and medications for return from patient care areas when on delivery rounds
      • Enters charges and credits for patient medications accurately
      • Generates reports, and pick lists as required
      • Answers the telephone, identifying self and department; directs calls to appropriate personnel
      • Answers requests at the window/door and makes stat deliveries to patient care and ancillary areas when requested
      • Organizes and prioritizes work assignments
      • Maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately, files documentation in appropriate locations
      • Demonstrates good oral and written communication
      • Keeps pharmacy areas clean, neat, and well-organized; keeps pharmacy equipment clean

      5. Participates in the quality improvement activities of the department
      • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage area inspections at least monthly; identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medications
      • Collects data, conducts quality monitors, and completes documentation as assigned

      6. Meets hospital and department standards of performance
      • Maintains a neat, professional, and well-groomed appearance; observes pharmacy dress code; wears identification badge at all times
      • Performs work within specified time frames; adapts positively to frequent interruptions and changes in workload and/or work schedule
      • Works cooperatively with all staff members; voices concerns and suggestions to appropriate to appropriate persons in a positive manner
      • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members; assists coworkers in tasks, as time permits

      7. Completed required training program to demonstrate competency in the following:
      • Packaging and labeling of drugs
      • Pharmacy terminology
      • Basic calculations
      • Quality control procedures
      • State and federal statutes, rules, and regulations regarding pharmacy technician duties, pharmacist duties, pharmacy intern duties, prescription or drug order processing procedures, drug record-keeping requirements, patient confidentiality, security requirements, and storage requirements.

      8. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
      • Seeks opportunity to advance on the technician ladder program
