- Conduct blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and perform decontamination procedures.
- Update patient information accurately and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly explain the venipuncture and other specimen collection processes, such as urine or fecal, in a courteous manner.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Fully comprehend and follow all physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Verify test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper storage at required temperatures.
- Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone inquiries and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
- Minimum of 6 months' experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of experience in the field.
- Experience in pediatric and geriatric phlebotomy.
- Bachelor's degree.
Job Title: Phlebotomist I
Job Description
The primary role of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various tasks including troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations to enhance efficiency within the lab setting.

Work Environment
The position is located at a large, busy patient service center and involves working in an Integrated Outpatient (IOP) setting. The phlebotomist will see all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric, and is expected to perform 30 to 40 draws daily. The role requires standing for most of the time and working collaboratively with one other phlebotomist. Training will take place at a designated location in Columbia, SC, and the work hours are Monday to Friday, from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.00/hr.
