Job Description

- Perform medical screening examinations in order to determine the need for laboratory tests, X-rays, and other procedures necessary to complete assessment of the patient.
- Prescribe for and treat a variety of diseases, disorders, and injuries.
- Perform medical histories and dictate narrative summaries.
- Write routine orders in an outpatient and inpatient setting.
- Define unknown conditions and resolve critical problems.
- Evaluate the primary care aspects of patient care, recognizing the need for reassessment by a physician or other staff.
- Provide consultation, teaching, and coordination with patients and their family members, regarding treatment and medical care
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
Overview
This position is located at the Naval Health Clinic New England in Newport, RI, within the Family Medicine Department.
Naval Station Newport (NAVSTA Newport) is a United States Navy base located in the city of Newport and the town of Middletown, Rhode Island. Naval Station Newport is home to the Naval War College and the Naval Justice School. It once was the homeport for Cruiser Destroyer Force Atlantic (COMCRUDESLANT), which relocated to Naval Station Norfolk in the early 1970s. In 1989 the base was added to the National Priorities List, after contamination had been discovered years earlier. Newport now maintains inactive ships at its pier facilities, along with the United States Coast Guard and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessels. In 2005 NAVSTA Newport gained over five hundred billets, in addition to receiving, again, the Officer Candidate School (OCS), the Naval Supply Corps School (in 2011), and several other activities, to include a few Army Reserve units.
As of 2022 Naval Station Newport, encompasses 1,063 acres on the west coast of Aquidneck Island in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Middletown, Rhode Island, and Newport, Rhode Island. The Base also encompasses the northern third of Gould Island (Rhode Island) in the Town of Jamestown, RI.
