Job Description

- Fabrication, installation, and maintenance of piping, tubing and fittings associated with a variety of systems including by not limited to steam, condensate, vacuum, compressed air, natural gas, laboratory gases, drain, waste, vent, process, potable, chilled and fire water.
- Read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and work from verbal instructions.
- Select the type and size of pipe or tubing for a project and measure, shape, and join the pipe or tubing according to the applicable specifications.
- Tasks may include working in confined spaces, at considerable heights, outside in inclement weather, in radiological area requiring special protective clothing and wearing a respirator.
- Inspect, diagnose malfunctions, fabricate, repair, maintain and test plumbing, heating, cooling, fire sprinkler, and other process piping systems and clear plugged sewer lines.
- May perform minor work in other trades and must be willing to work with others.
- Must have strong mechanical skills and proven abilities as a fabricator.
- Work includes all types of fabrication from intricate tubing involved in delicate research apparatuses heavy piping and associated fittings, specialties and pressure retaining assemblies.
- Off-shift and overtime work may be required.
- Must abide by the principles of Safe Conduct of Research including being personally responsible for ensuring safe operations by raising safety concerns, using a questioning attitude, considering hazards for every task, and never stop learning.
- High school diploma and the completion of a pipefitting apprenticeship program
- A minimum of three years of journeyman level industrial experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and relevant experience will be considered.
- A Pipefitter should be able to perform basic trade skills such as related mathematics, use of tools, make material lists, compliance with codes and regulations, and observe all safety rules.
- Work will involve various physical requirements and certain working conditions and as such a post offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
- Completion of an apprenticeship program and/or formal training programs as well as industrial experience is preferred.
- Strong trouble shooting skills as well as fabrication, installation and maintenance experience with all aspects of piping systems are a plus.
- The ability to sketch a piping or tubing layout and complete a material take off is strongly desired.
- Must be a team player with above average communications skills and be willing to work with others.
