Planning Intern
(Fountain Valley)
Under supervision, the Planning Intern will review and summarize reports, assist with daily planning and administrative tasks with other Planners, and analyze planning and environmental issues. This internship position will contribute to the Planning department’s efficiency and organization. The intern will assist in sorting and digitizing content from a department member, implementing document retention policies, and streamlining the shared file drive for easy accessibility. Furthermore, the intern will assist in the transition roles and responsibilities into Klir software, contributing to the documentation of Planning staff activities. This will be an intern experience to enhance organizational skills and provide valuable experience in project management and planning frameworks.
Current enrollment in a bachelor’s or graduate degree program with courses in the fields of planning, environmental planning, urban planning, environmental studies, or equivalent. Coursework or experience in CEQA, NEPA, planning principles, permits, cultural tribal considerations, GIS, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, and grant writing preferred. Preference will be given to students enrolled in graduate level programs, but undergraduates who have completed significant coursework are encouraged to apply.
Ability to read and analyze documents such as general plans, drainage area management plans, water quality control plans, environmental permits, and water quality control permits. Proficiency in Powerpoint and Microsoft application software such as Word and Excel are a must. The ideal candidate should demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, verbal and oral communication proficiency, and proactive project management capabilities. This internship offers a valuable opportunity to apply academic knowledge and practical experience in a professional planning environment.
The position may involve driving to various locations in the Santa Ana River Watershed to collect reports and information. A valid California Class “C” Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance are required.
Internships intend to provide meaningful training and work experience for students pursuing academic studies related to the District’s mission and goals. Interns must submit proof of full-time enrollment, class schedules, and grades each semester/quarter. Interns are not eligible for employee benefits. Interns are “at-will” and can be terminated at the discretion of the Department Manager with or without cause and with or without prior notice. This is not a seasonal internship. Interns work year-round.

Environment: Standard office setting.
Physical: Positions in this class typically require reaching, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Schedule: Working hours are during regular operating hours, Monday to Friday between 7:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. We work around the intern's schedule. This is a part-time internship not to exceed 25 working hours a week. We are looking for interns who can work up to 25 hours/week.
Hourly Rate: Undergraduate: $17 per hour & Graduate: $20 per hour
