      Job summary

      We are looking for a motivated and skilled Orthopaedic Practitioner / Plaster Technician to join our friendly and supportive team at Dorset County Hospital.

      Main duties of the job

      To be responsible for assessing individual patient care needs and developing, implementing and evaluating plans of care for patients in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines. To provide a plastering service for the orthopaedic wards, clinics, theatres, fracture clinics and Emergency Department. To work flexibly to meet the needs of the service.

      • Work autonomously undertaking holistic assessment examination in order to implement management plans for patients.
      • Use specialist knowledge and skills to provide treatment to patients attending the Plaster Room and to assist the Lead Orthopaedic Practitioner on the development of new and current services.
      • To work closely with the Lead Orthopaedic Practitioner, Senior Nurses, Divisional Managers and the Multidisciplinary Team to provide high quality and cost effective patient focused services.
      • Participate in the delivery of formal and informal teaching for the MDT and act as a resource for education and development within the service.

      • British Casting Certificate
      • Active on BOA Register
      • Maintains professional portfolio

      Knowledge & Experience

      Essential

      • Recent evidence of work in plaster room environment (within last 3 months) and demonstrable experience of Orthopaedic Practitioner or equivalent
      • Evidence of recent clinical skills and competency with a variety of casting materials equipment
      • Evidence of clinical skills and competency to undertake a variety of full casts in plaster of paris. Including- Colles, scaphoid, Bennetts, above elbow, below elbow, below knee, long leg, cylinder, shoulder spica and slipper
      • Variety of slabs- including volar, U, below elbow, below knee, above knee, ulna
      • Evidence of experience in fitting appliances including wrist braces, knee braces, fixed walker boots

      • Able to work on own initiative and under pressure across competing priorities
      • Frequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort for several long periods during shift and ability to undertake safe manual handling of patients for clinical interventions
      • Evidence of ability to practice as competent practitioner

      • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
