      Job Description:

      SUMMARY

      This is technical police property and evidence work receiving, maintaining the chain of custody, and disposing of evidence and property.

      Positions allocated to this classification report to a designated supervisor and work under limited supervision. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its emphasis on evidence and property; and maintaining detailed computerized records of associated movement of such items.

      EXAMPLES OF WORK*

      ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

      Receives and maintains chain of custody of evidence and found property.

      Testifies in court concerning chain of custody of evidence.

      Provides for property and evidence review as required by law.

      Receives, stores, maintains, and disposes of physical evidence and abandoned property in accordance with Florida statutes, City ordinances, and department policies.

      Maintains file of evidence and property records, including associated computer files and reviewing the files to ensure accurate and reliable data.

      Coordinates inventory of departmental capital items.

      Performs criminal history checks on persons receiving firearms.

      Researches court documents for the purpose of evidence disposal.

      Researches and exports video evidence for court proceedings.

      Maintains the integrity and chain of custody of evidence and associated packaging materials.

      Attends work on continuous and regular basis.

      NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

      Assists department inspector in division inspections.

      Assists the Police Property and Evidence Supervisor as needed.

      Supervises Property Specialist and other support personnel in the absence of the Police Property and Evidence Supervisor.

      May be required to work with, or will have access to, information or documents pertaining to criminal investigations, especially those dealing with drug-related activity.

      Performs other related duties as assigned.

      QUALIFICATIONS

      To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job function satisfactorily. Below are the required education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions.

      EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

      Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma, and four (4) years of experience in property control, or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer work experience within a law enforcement agency.

      CERTIFICATIONS OR LICENSES

      Licenses

      Valid driver license required upon appointment. Valid Florida Driver License required within thirty (30) days of appointment and at all times while employed in this classification.

      Certifications

      None.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

      Considerable knowledge of proper procedures for maintenance of inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials.

      Considerable knowledge of proper procedures for handling of evidence.

      Considerable knowledge of storeroom and inventory methods and procedures.

      Knowledge of Florida statutes, City ordinances, and departmental rules and regulations dealing with evidence.

      Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

      Ability to testify in court proceedings.

      Ability to supervise work of others.

      Ability to use Microsoft software (Word, Outlook, Excel) and relevant software applications.

      Ability to maintain security and confidentiality.

      Ability to professionally interact with criminal justice personnel, the public and co-workers.

      PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

      To perform this job successfully, an individual must possess certain physical abilities and be able to withstand work related environmental conditions.

      PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

      While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for prolonged periods of time.

      May on occasion require lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling less than twenty (20) pounds without assistance.

      WORK ENVIRONMENT

      Will be required to travel for work-related training and crime-related conferences and events.

      Work may require exposure to hazardous conditions and/or hazardous unknown substances.

      May be subject to call out during non-work hours.

      Will be required to work with, or have access to, information or documents pertaining to confidential criminal investigations.

      Will be required to attend court proceedings.
