- Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
- Custody Assignment
- Receives and determines the physical condition of prisoners; transports injured and ill prisoners to hospital for medical care; performs computer check to obtain prisoner's criminal history; fingerprints, photographs, and books prisoners; removes and inventories prisoner's property; gathers DNA evidence as required by law, assist Officers with collection of sample from under the influence prisoners. Assumes and maintains custodial care of prisoners.
- Receives and accounts for bail, including cash, and bail bonds; prepares and checks proper forms for the release of prisoners or the transfer to another facility; transports prisoners to County Jail or other facilities; responds to citizen inquiries regarding those in custody.
- Assists with the processing of court-ordered registrants.
- Assemble court packets as directed, for presentation to the District Attorney's Office.
- Enter arrest information into the Department's online arrest log.
- Responsible for after hour teletype entries and correspondence as required by the Department of Justice.
- Responsible for daily upkeep of transportation van. Assist other Police agencies with photos and/or research with prisoner inquires.
- Prepares medical billing summary documentation for billing purposes related to in custody prisoners.
- Possession of a High School diploma, or equivalent
- College coursework in police sciences is highly desirable.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid class C California driver's license.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certificate.
- Will be required to attend and successfully complete the Court and Temporary Holding Facility Course within one (1) year of appointment.
- Must be able to speak and understand English to effectively communicate with fellow employees, customers, and vendors.

The City of Oxnard's Police Department is seeking a Police Service Officer with strong technical and customer service skills to be part of the team.
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of law enforcement duties in the Booking Unit to support the efficiency of the Patrol Division. Duties include the operation and maintenance of the Oxnard Police Department temporary holding facility; identifies, books, maintains custody of, transports and releases prisoners; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Police Service Officer is the journey level civilian class that can be assigned to the Oxnard Police Department's temporary holding facility. Police Service Officers provide a full range of non-sworn functions in the operation of the department. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Senior Police Service Officer which is assigned to provide supervision to assigned staff in the Booking Unit.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant or the Senior Police Service Officer. Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision.
WORK SCHEDULE:
The normal work hours for this position vary. This position may be required to be available to work additional hours as needed to respond to workload needs. This position is eligible for overtime payInclude but are not limited to the following:The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
Education and/or Experience:The selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation which includes Polygraph, Psychological and Medical testing.
UNION MEMBERSHIP: Positions in this classification are represented by Oxnard Peace Officers Association (OPOA).

NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

This position requires a twelve (12) month probationary period.
