The Department
The Torrance Police Department has been proudly serving the community of Torrance for over 80 years. The Position
Police Services Officers are civilian positions within the Police Department. The primary job of the Police Services Officer is to book, search and care for prisoners confined in the City jail facilities. Police Services Officers perform custodial duties in the lockup facilities, including body searching, feeding, and checking prisoners.
Police Services Officers may also serve subpoenas for summoning witnesses to trial; keep records of subpoenas received and served; interview complainants and take reports; accept, tag, issue and keep records on property to be used as evidence; enforce parking regulations and write parking citations.

Hours: Police Services Officers must be available to work four, 10-hour shifts per week on a rotating basis, including weekends and holidays. Shift hours are 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Day Shift), 2 p.m. to 12 a.m. (Midnight) (Swing Shift), and 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. (Graveyard Shift).
Shift Differentials: In addition to base pay, Police Services Officers will receive 5% for swing shift and 7.5% for graveyard shift.
Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate. No specific experience is required; experience working with the public is desirable. Must be 18 years of age at the time of the application.
Successful completion of a Standards and Training for Corrections certified Adult Corrections Officer Core Course must be completed within the first year of employment as a condition of continued employment.
License and/or Certificates:A valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Class C) of the appropriate class or grade.

Candidates must pass each component of the exam process, as well as a thorough background investigation to be considered for hire. The background investigation will include job and personal references, arrest records, credit history, use of controlled substances, medical evaluations, and a polygraph.
Candidates must also complete a six (6) to nine (9) week jailer training course during the first year of employment while on probation. The training is a combination of classroom and physical fitness program.
