      Overview

      The salary range for this position is $5,546.67 - $5,677.42 per month depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

      A Postdoctoral Research Scholar position is offered in the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University (SDSU), employed through the SDSU Research Foundation. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be mentored by Dr. Jessica McCurley, a clinical psychologist and faculty member in the SDSU/University of California, San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology. Dr. McCurley’s research focuses on reducing inequities in mental and physical health conditions for low-income populations, psychosocial and socioeconomic aspects of health, Hispanic/Latinx health, and health policy approaches to addressing social needs (e.g., food & housing insecurity). The Postdoctoral position will involve participation in a NIH-funded study called “Be Well at Work: Engaging low-wage hospital workers in the design and implementation of a depression and physical activity intervention.” This study is a collaboration between SDSU and a local health system, Scripps Health, and aims to reduce depression, increase physical activity, and address social needs among low-wage hospital workers.

      Responsibilities

      The Postdoctoral Research Scholar is responsible for but not limited to:

      Research Activities: 85%

      The Postdoctoral Scholar will contribute to ongoing NIH-funded clinical research projects that focus on promoting health equity in mental health and cardiometabolic conditions in low-income populations.

      • Assisting with project management, clinical intervention delivery, IRB/NIH documentation, data analysis, manuscript preparation, grant proposals, and supervision/mentorship of research assistants.
      • Lead weekly project meetings and work with study investigators on data management, analysis, and manuscript preparation.
      • Pursue independent data analysis/manuscripts from multiple existing datasets focused on Hispanic/Latinx health, health disparities, migrant/border health, and social needs.
      • Mentorship in career development, research methodology, teaching/mentorship, and grant writing.
      • The Scholar may also take advantage of research seminars and career development opportunities throughout SDSU, UC San Diego, and Scripps Health.

      Other Duties and Responsibilities: 15%

      • Attend weekly meetings with the PI and lab.
      • Participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students and research staff.
      • Attend training seminars, colloquia, and other regularly scheduled educational activities at SDSU and other collaborating institutions.

      Qualifications

      Knowledge and Abilities

      • Ability to communicate effectively (both written and verbal), including communication with staff, faculty, students, and research participants, as well as groups
      • Ability to train and supervise staff and students
      • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and interact effectively with young adults, coworkers, research teams, and administrative staff
      • Knowledge of manuscript writing, grant proposals, and other grant responsibilities such as summary or progress reports
      • Ability to prepare conference presentations and make presentations to groups
      • Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students and research staff
      • Ability to be well organized, meet deadlines, display detail orientation, and possess good judgment and common sense
      • Knowledge of Hispanic/Latinx health and health disparities
      • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity

      Education and Experience

      • Doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology (preferred) or related fields, (e.g., social work, public health, social and behavioral sciences)
      • 0-5 years of relevant experience
      • Bilingual; verbal and written fluency in English and Spanish

      • Relevant research experience
      • Experience using statistical software
      • Experience in working with diverse populations
      • Experience in working with Hispanic/Latinx individuals
      • Experience of manuscript writing and grant proposals
      • Experience preparing conference presentations
