      General Purpose

      As outlined in the collective bargaining agreement, the Hydro Repairman can be designated as a Pre-Apprentice. This job posting is for a Hydro Repairman Pre-Apprentice Journeyman Operator Maintenance (JOM) position.

      As a Hydro Repairman, job duties include performing minor construction, repair and maintenance of non-generation facilities, roads, trails, bridges used in the hydro department and work under the direction of the Journeyman. Hydro Repairman shall operate equipment in which they have been trained, proven proficient, and perform other tasks as assigned.

      With the designation of Pre-Apprentice Journeyman Operator Maintenance (JOM), the candidates selected for this position will be required to progress into the established Apprentice Operator Maintenance Program to then become qualified as a Journeyman Operator Maintenance.

      The Hydro Repairman Pre-Apprentice JOM will hold the position for an indefinite period of time until offered an apprenticeship at a location to be selected by the Company. Please note that candidates will be required to accept the apprenticeship when and where it is offered in the South Hydro region. Relocation will be available under the current bargaining agreement.

      The apprentice program is designed to teach the candidate aspects of a JOM's work. A JOM is a qualified Journeyman Operator who is assigned to a hydro generating area and whose primary responsibility is to operate and maintain the power plants, dams, waterways, and associated equipment. They are responsible for the safety and protection of the facilities they operate, including ensuring adequate protection for workers performing work on and in these facilities. A JOM performs all normal duties on a hydro project in which they are assigned, including domestic drinking water; substation inspections; station and line switching; routine station checks, non-precision mechanical tasks; troubleshooting and replacement of single phase non-generating electrical equipment 240V and less; repair and minor construction of facility buildings and their systems; minor repairs to canals, impounds, roadways and bridges; light vehicle maintenance; operation of heavy equipment; and other normal duties on a hydro project. Please note that upon completion of the JOM apprenticeship, candidates will be required to bid on open Journeyman JOM positions throughout the Pacific Power service territory.

      It will be mandatory for the employee to establish full-time residence in Company provided housing.

      Requirements

      • Must be at least 18 years of age.
      • Must have a high school diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent.
      • Possess a current Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License within six months of initial employment. Prior to the first day performing work as an Hydro Repairman/Pre-Apprentice JOM, a CDL learners permit is required for the state the position is in. This can be obtained following a job offer during the pre-employment process.
      • Must have received either a passing score of 5 or higher on the NJATC examination, or achieved Silver level or higher on the ACT Work Keys NCRC assessment.
      • Candidates may be required to perform an aptitude test and/or mechanical skills evaluation (MSE). This evaluation is a variety of trade-oriented tasks the applicant will be expected to perform routinely on the job.
      • Individuals, who pass the aptitude test and MSE, must also successfully pass the interview and rating phase. An interview panel will meet with each qualifying applicant and at the completion of the interview, determine a numerically rated score.
      • Once selected for the Hydro Repairman/Pre-Apprentice JOM candidate list, applicants must pass a company-paid physical, drug screen and background check, which is processed after a job offer is extended and accepted.
      • This position requires a post-offer, pre-placement physical capacity screening, conducted by a licensed physical therapist, to assure the candidate meets the physical demands of the job. The screening will assess only the identified physical demands of the job being applied for.
