- Assists with patient flow through clinic by greeting and rooming patients, scribing, and walking patients to appropriate department (front desk, technicians, and patient care coordinators) to complete patient visit.
- Treats each patient with respect by greeting them by name, introducing yourself, cleaning the direct patient contact points in front of the patient, and explaining what will happen during the exam.
- Documents patient exams in electronic health record, noting specifically the exam components, diagnoses, treatment plans, orders, medications, return to clinic orders and coding of visit and charges are accurate as directed by the provider .
- Provides patient and family counseling and education as needed.
- Dispenses medications or over the counter samples as directed by the provider . Document dispensed medications in electronic health record.
- Reviews all chart notes and correspondence daily to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Travels with provider to various sites to ensure coordinated and effective patient care.
- Prints and dispenses glasses and contact lens prescriptions as directed by provider .
- Participates in trainings and meets requirements for Meaningful Use measures, HIPAA compliance and Protected Health Information (PHI).
- Assists with diagnostic testing including but not limited to visual field tests, photos, and OCT imaging.
- Participates in all companywide initiatives.
- Is open to and willing to try new workflows and ideas and provide encouragement for the provider to try new workflows and ideas.
- Monitors provider schedules and communicate scheduling issues clearly to managers to help understand concerns.
- Remains calm at all times and reports any issues to appropriate levels of management.
- Responds to patient inquiries and documents communication with patients, ensures patient communication is addressed within one business day.
- Triages phone calls, process medication refills, and process prior authorization request. Properly and timely documenting any communication with patient or pharmacy into patient’s electronic health record.
- Enters all surgical orders per provider’s request. Collaborates with the surgery counselors and ambulatory surgery center staff regarding the accurateness of these surgical orders
- Schedules clinic and procedure appointments and/or enter recalls as ordered by the MD. Stays up to date on requirements of clinic appointments, if there is a direct impact on billing, and is responsible for making sure all criteria are met.
- Works with provider making sure all additional forms are completed that can impact billing, patient out of pocket and any additional required forms related to the specialist’s appointment types.
- Assists patients with applying for special programs to cover out of pocket costs for any high-cost line of service if available.
- Sets up procedure rooms and prep patients for the sterile and clean procedures according to the providers preferences.
- Is responsible for surgical instrument cleaning, sterilizing and care of surgical instruments in the clinic setting.
- Performs special testing including kinetic perimetry (Goldman Perimetry) or any new technology specific to specialist.
- Is directly involved with supply management that are unique to the provider for special procedures.
- Assesses clinic flow for individual provider and works directly with EPM template manager as requested to adjust clinic flow to ensure proper access for patients and scheduling of procedures.
- Prepares culture specimens including proper storage, documentation, and transportation. Responsible for maintaining PAR levels of special lab and specimens required by provider.
- Must be willing and able to work a variety of hours and work in the various locations as needed. The locations include Hudson, Hugo, New Richmond, Stillwater, Woodbury, and any partner facility.
- Must present self at the workstation, ready for work, at the scheduled time
- Works with all AEC providers
- Participates in department and company meetings, as requested

- M.D. or D.O. Degree required.

Position Summary
The Pre-Residency Clinical Fellow. The fellow has an opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience in an efficient, modern multi-specialty ophthalmology private practice group situated in the east metro Twin Cities. The fellow will primarily assist an assigned provider in day-to-day clinic flow and delivering the highest standards of patient care by following the policies and procedures of the clinic operation and provider direction. This position will accurately document the patient’s exam into the electronic health record and assist with patient education and communication. This position will assist with internal and external communication to patients and/or as part of the provider care team. The Pre-Residency Clinical Fellow also assists with facilitation of surgeries, procedures, clinic flow, scheduling of return appointments, and having complete documentation of the patient exam into the patient’s electronic health record as directed by the provider. The fellow will also assist with diagnostic testing and evaluation of patients in clinic and will periodically have opportunities to shadow ophthalmic surgery with a variety of subspecialists in the group. Based on interest, opportunities will be available to take a leadership role in a growing 501c3 non-profit public service project called Respectacle, whose mission is to recycle eyeglasses to the underserved populations worldwide. There will also be opportunities to participate in ongoing clinical research studies if the candidate has interest.
