      Full time, 36.75 hours per week.
      Fixed term position to 30 June 2026.

      The Defence Trailblazer for Concept to Sovereign Capability is a $250 million enterprise powered by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the University of Adelaide (UoA), with funding from the Australian Government through the Trailblazer Universities Program, as well as university and industry partners. The Defence Trailblazer will:

      • Fast-track world-leading research in partnership with Defence industry partners to meet capability priorities for Defence
      • Transform the way universities and academics work with industry
      • Drive job-ready skills of the future, ensuring both research and development activities and education qualifications are aligned to industry need
      • Increase research impact by encouraging the translation and commercialisation of university research towards Australia’s Defence National Manufacturing Priority.

      Our team is seeking an experienced and passionate Precision Toolmaker for a once in a generation opportunity to work within the DualTech-USPL Group. This role will report to the University of Adelaide Professor in USPL, supporting the Defence Trailblazer Hypersonic & Countermeasure Theme to fabricate components, housings and systems for Ultrashort Short Pulsed Lasers as designed by the Lead Professor, Laser Head Design Team, Industry sponsored Adjunct Professors and Researchers on Hypersonic Countermeasure programs.

      The Precision Toolmaker will work closely and collaboratively with the University of Adelaide Professor in USPL, providing support for the DualTech-USPL Research Staff & Students, DualTech-USPL Laser Head Design Team for the Defence Trailblazer.

      This role will be working with Industry placed Adjunct Professors/Researchers in UOA on Hypersonic Countermeasure research projects and CSIRO when utilising Defence Trailblazer’s acquired specialised precision machining and other facilities made available in support of any fabrication requirements.

      To be successful you will need:

      • Demonstrated experience in running and working within a complex workshop environment.
      • Demonstrated ability to think analytically and exercise initiative and judgment to achieve excellence in precision toolmaking.
      • High level organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks against deadlines.
      • High level communication skills, both verbal and written.
      • Demonstrated ability to work both individually, and collectively as a member of a broader team, including industrial partners.
      • Experience and demonstrated computer literacy skills in the use of specialised engineering software (i.e. Cad/Cam).
      • Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.

      Qualifications:

      • Mechanical Trade Certificate with extensive post trade experience in mechanical design and manufacture; or
      • Extensive experience and specialist expertise or broad knowledge in technical or administrative fields; or
      • An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.

      Ability to achieve a minimum Base Line Security Clearance in order to carry out certain program duties, in line with the classification of the labs may be required.
