      Req#: 416704

Argonne’s Transportation and Power Systems (TAPS) Division seeks a research engineer experienced in decarbonized prime mover and fuel technologies.

The successful candidate will serve as the principal investigator for experimental DOE sponsored research and for various collaborations with industrial partnerships. The technology research will include but is not limited to hydrogen PEM fuel cell systems and reciprocating engines with decarbonized fuels, both within the context of mobile powertrain systems. The research will be predominately experimental in nature and require some knowledge of 1-D modeling with regard to supporting systems and boundary operating conditions. The successful candidate will also interact with the powertrain systems modeling group for emulating various on-road and non-road application powertrains and their operating duty cycles to evaluate the transient characteristics of the various technologies. The position’s role is within the Advanced Power Systems Research (APSR) group of the Advanced Propulsion and Power Department of the TAPS Division, and reports to the APSR Group Leader.

      Position Requirements

      • Conduct research on decarbonized powertrain technologies, including but not limited to hydrogen fuel cell systems and hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) development. The position will work as part of multi-disciplinary, multi-laboratory teams.

      • Plan and perform complex experiments, data analysis, and report results on prime movers in an emulated systems environment generated with a Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) facility. New powertrain technology transient performance is a major focus.

      • Knowledge and skills in PEM fuel cells and balance of plant research techniques including collection and analysis of experimental data.

      • Knowledge and skills in ICEs , in particular, hydrogen combustion strategies, , and engine research techniques including collection and analysis of experimental engine data.

      • Knowledge of life-cycle environmental impacts.

      • Knowledge of engineering concepts and procedures.

      • Skilled oral and written communications skills at all levels of the organization.

      • Skills in working in a research environment.

      • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity, and Teamwork.

      • A successful candidate must have the ability to model Argonne’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility values.

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD3 or RD4) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position. The requirements for the desired levels are as follows:

RD3: Bachelor’s and 8+ years, or Master’s and 5+ years, or Doctorate and 4+0 years

RD4: Bachelor’s and 12+ years, or Master’s and 7+ years, or Doctorate and 6+0 years
