      Job Summary

This is a remote/work from home position.

      The Program Chemist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and ensuring implementation of the quality assurance program as it pertains to sampling and chemical analyses associated with Hazardous Waste site investigation and remediation under RCRA/CERCLA and other state and federal programs. This position is not an R&D chemist or a bench chemist but is more fully aligned to supervisory QA/QC role with accountability to ensure the quality, accuracy, and usability of the data for which s/he is responsible. The overarching responsibility includes the planning (where necessary) and oversight of field sampling activities, selection of subcontract laboratories, identification of specific laboratory chemical analyses/methodologies, periodic reviews of the data verification processes being implemented, performing data validation, evaluation of recommendations made by the project team over the course of the program regarding use of these data, and continuous improvement of the chemistry program. The selected candidate is also responsible for providing chemistry supervision and consulting services to Versar’s Project Teams to ensure the quality of products and services provided to each client is in accordance with the specifications described in the contract, project plans, scopes of work, laboratory subcontracts, and other project directives and contractual requirements.

      Job Responsibilities:

      • Manage/administer the delivery of analytical chemistry services (provided by contract laboratories) for Versar’s National Remediation Programs with particular emphasis on supervision and training of staff and adherence to rigorous QA/QC requirements.
      • Creation of Sampling and Analysis Plans, UFP-QAPP documents, and SOPs for field sampling procedures/processes, quality assurance/quality control, field equipment use and selection, and data management. Includes coordination with selected labs to ensure electronic data deliverables meet our requirements.
      • Planning and/or providing guidance to field teams for sample collection methods and pre-characterization of waste materials to be transported offsite as well as confirmation of clean margins post-excavation of contaminated soil. Revise field sampling procedures when necessary to integrate new technology and sampling methods or better address the site setting, the volume of soil and land area(s) of contaminated sites, etc.
      • Integrate with Project Managers to assist with planning of field sampling events, including materials and equipment recommendations, procurement, and SOPs for management of field data collection (chain-of-custody, etc.)
      • Management of contracts and agreements with laboratories for Electronic Data Deliverables (EDDs) and third-party data validation service providers.
      • Broad oversight of field sampling, including selection of chemical analyses, approved methodologies, coordination with laboratories on methodologies and sample containers, review of daily field and laboratory forms, instruction of field sampling personnel, and adherence to sample holding times, and other quality control sample requirements.
      • Conduct formal laboratory and field audits for Quality Assurance.
      • Oversight of data management, including data review and validation using electronic data deliverables (EDDs) from the laboratory, and coordinated transfer into other client databases (ERPIMS, HQAES, EQuIS, etc.) following client protocol.
      • Instruct junior staff on the DM/DV and data transfer processes for project-related laboratory data and create a team of capable support personnel for the Program.
      • Working knowledge of DOD and EPA verification tools and databases, such as USACE-ADR.NET, USAF-ERPTOOLSX, FUDS–ADR/ADAPT, EPA-SEDD, SCRIBE, etc.
      • Knowledge of commercially available Data Management solutions/outsourcing.
      • Work with laboratories on the implementation of new procedures for emerging containments.

      Required Qualifications:

      • Master of Science in Chemistry.
      • A minimum of five (5) years of environmental chemistry experience, including organic and inorganic methods, field sampling procedures, and laboratory analyses.
      • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience managing and/or overseeing chemistry laboratory(ies) (may include subcontract laboratories), including performing quality assurance/quality control and troubleshooting. May be included in the five years’ experience described above.
      • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience on DOD and EPA projects especially as relates to environmental investigation and remediation.

      OR

      • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. For this position, experience MAY NOT be substituted for the B.S. in Chemistry. No other science or engineering degrees will be considered for this position.
      • A minimum of ten (10) years of environmental chemistry experience, including organic and inorganic methods, field sampling procedures, and laboratory analyses.
      • A minimum of three (5) years’ experience managing and/or overseeing chemistry laboratory(ies) (may include subcontract laboratories), including performing quality assurance/quality control and troubleshooting. May be included in the ten (10) years of experience described above.
      • A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience on DOD projects especially as related to environmental investigation and remediation.

      Highly Desirable Qualifications:

      • Certified Professional Chemist (CPC) or American Chemical Society Certified Chemistry Professional (ACS-CP)
      • EPA experience desirable, including chemical laboratory analytical database experience.
