      MISSION STATEMENT
      The mission of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

      SUMMARY

      The Program Director is responsible for managing and producing comprehensive communications for high priority initiatives at MD Anderson for internal audiences. This includes writing, editing and posting daily news, adhering to brand standards and approving videos for Inside MD Anderson; compiling the monthly Leadership Communications Toolkit for institutional managers; tracking and analyzing the success of our communications; and keeping up with technology and tools useful to the Internal Communications team. Other activities include communication consulting, strategic planning and logistics, and collaborating with other communicators involved in daily activities that help employees stay informed, engaged and productive. The position incorporates a high level of creativity, respect for confidentiality, independent planning and decision-making, and effective problem-solving skills.

      The ideal candidate will have experience with content management systems and a background in journalism or news. Additionally, expertise in internal communications with a strong editing skill set is also preferred.

      JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

      Institutional Editor.

      • Create, coordinate, edit and consult on high-priority institutional communications with broad scope and reach. This includes daily writing, editing and posting of news on Inside MD Anderson, and ensuring style and brand compliance throughout our intranet.
      • Works with team members to improve writing and adhere to style guidelines.

      • Manage, develop and implement communications strategies, plans and content for Inside MD Anderson to advance goals and activities for institutional communications, in partnership with the Associate Director.
      • Collaborate with customers and team members to maintain content on our intranet.
      • Manage backend data within our content management system.
      • Ensure consistency and integrity of documents, images, accessibility, and more.
      • Track and analyze success of communications, provide status reports to team members and identify potential problems to solve.

      Writing and Editing.

      • Clear, consistent writing and editing in all work products. Maintains Associated Press style, as well as MD Anderson style guidelines.
      • Regular contributions to our publications and our programs and services through articles, presentations, videos, scripts, slides, flyers or other materials.

      People Management.

      • Provide coaching and mentoring for direct reports to develop and expand talent.
      • Determine annual strategic and developmental goals appropriate for employees' skill levels.
      • Complete employees' performance evaluations in a timely manner, as required in Strategic Communications.
      • Share expertise and offer direction, as appropriate, to other members of the IC team, to colleagues in Institutional Affairs, as well as to employees in other areas of the institution.

      Other duties as assigned

      Education

      Required: Bachelor's degree in in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

      Preferred: Master's degree in English, Journalism, Public Relations, Communications or related field.

      Experience

      Required: Seven years of experience public relations, communications, writing/editing or related field and three years of lead/project management/supervisory/management experience. With preferred degree, five years of required experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate and/or LEADing Self Discover programs may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience. Completion of both programs can be substituted for a maximum of two years of supervisory or management experience.

      Must pass pre-employment skills test as required and administered by Human Resources.
