We are looking for Program Interpreters at the Canadian War Museum for the summer season!
Your main responsibilities will be to:
• Proactively welcome visitors, answer their questions, provide them with information about the exhibits, programs and services of the Canadian War Museum (CWM);
• Assemble material and present tours, activities, games, demonstrations, role-playing, etc;
• Encourage visitors to participate and prompt dialogue between visitors, parents/guardians and children;
• Make reports and recommendations related to program implementation and delivery.
• Reassure frustrated or unhappy visitors, listen to criticism and deal with complaints immediately;
• Ensure order in all sections of the museums in collaboration with Security Services, so that the public can benefit from a well-presented exhibit at any time;What we are looking for:
The ideal candidate is focused on the visitor experience, flexible, patient and has a facility for teamwork and collaboration with a demonstrated interest in the stories and identities of Canada’s diverse military community.Relevant experience in:
• Group facilitation;
• Working in an environment offering services to children and families;
• Program animation and speaking engagingly, clearly, and audibly to large groups of peopleKnowledge of:
• Programs and services offered by the Canadian War Museum;
• The principles of lifelong learning and the needs of broadly diverse audiences;
• Interpretation techniques and group management.Education: Secondary School Diploma or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Enrollment in or completion of an educational, museum studies, or history program is considered an asset
Language: B-C. We encourage all candidates to submit their application, regardless of whether they believe they meet the linguistic requirements of the position. Qualified candidates will be sent for linguistic validation.
Other requirements:
• Must be available to work during the museums operating hours and according to operational needs and at least one weekend day (Saturday / Sunday), as well as statutory holidays.
• A tentative training period is currently planned from April 28 to May 2 and from May 5 to May 9. You must be fully available during these days.
Compensation: E2 - $22,26 $ to $27,54/hour (2025-26 scale) + sick days and percentage in lieu of benefits (up to 10.5%) Status: Temporary part time summer positions with no assigned hours (up to 40 hours/week) until September 10 2025 with possibility of extension as a program interpreter or host.
Location: 1, Vimy Place, Ottawa, Ontario and/or 100, Laurier Street, Gatineau, Quebec. Program interpreter shifts are assigned based on operational needs and training portfolio.
Security Clearance: Enhanced reliability Open to: Museum employees, external candidates and/or candidates from our inventory. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
