Job Description
- Req#: R6991
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.
Project Manager – New Woodland Creation
At Scottish Water, our purpose is to support a flourishing Scotland by looking after Scotland's most precious natural resource, from source to tap. We keep Scotland supplied with world class water, as well as care for our environment every minute of every day.
With reservoirs and treatment sites across the country, we manage a lot of land – and we want to put it to work to help meet Scottish Water’s “Beyond Net Zero” ambition. That’s why we’re working with Bell Ingram on a nationwide woodland creation programme.
Our goal is to increase carbon capture by creating biodiverse woodlands on our landholdings. Beyond the carbon benefits, woodlands provide clean air, offer protection from flooding, provide habitats for a wealth of wildlife, from shade-loving plants and delicate fungi, to nesting birds, elusive mammals and rare insects.
What you’ll do
As a Project Manager, you’ll take the lead on managing the delivery of the woodland creation programme, from the initial design phase through to planting and future maintenance. You’ll be managing costs, tracking progress, measuring performance and building positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
You’ll also assist with compliance to make sure we deliver the standards laid out in our Net Zero Route Map. From making sure we have the appropriate governance approvals, to preparing papers, to making sure we meet Quality and Environmental legislative requirements.
A key part of the job will be monitoring the performance of our delivery partners, and making sure that the work is completed in line with our Health and Safety standards.
You’ll also have the opportunity to support our wider net zero strategy, working closely with the SW delivery teams and delivery partners responsible for delivering low carbon initiatives across our capital investment programme.
What You’ll Need
While experience of working on woodland or carbon capture projects would be fantastic, it isn’t essential. This is primarily a project management role, so we’re looking for someone who has a background in successfully managing capital projects, ideally with an engineering or sustainability focus.
It would be valuable if candidates had an understanding of statutory Construction Health, Safety and Environment regulations (e.g. CDM) and an understanding of the application of Engineering Forms of contract (e.g. NEC4). However, we will be providing training and development in these areas.
Communication is key. You will need to be a strong communicator who can work with stakeholders to successfully plan and hit performance milestones.
You’ll sometimes be out visiting project sites. These tend to be in remote areas, so it’s important that you have a full UK-issued driving license. (And you’re welcome to use one of our electric pool cars…)
Character is important to us. Across the whole of Scottish Water, we look for people who are Bold, Responsible, Inspiring and Caring. (And you can expect these characteristics to make an appearance in your interview with us…)
Looking out for you
While the work we do is important, we know it’s not the only thing that matters. That’s why we make sure you have everything you need to find a good work-life balance.
You’ll get plenty of time to recharge with 38 days of holiday every year (including public holidays). And you can even buy five more if you need a little extra time. You can also take paid time off to volunteer in your community.
When it comes to major life events we have family-friendly policies around adoption, maternity, and parental leave. And for the everyday? We embrace flexible working.
For your future, there’s our pension (the ‘know-what-you’ll-get-when-you-retire’ kind), as well as life assurance.
As for some nice extras? You can expect an annual company bonus. Not to mention access to SW Splash – handy rewards that can save you money on holidays, bills, and shopping.
The not-so-small print
The salary range for this role is £35,384-£47,924 .
The team covers the whole of Scotland, so this role can be based at any of our main office locations, e.g. Fairmilehead, Stepps, Dundee, Perth, Inverness. We operate a hybrid working model, so you can expect to spend some days at home, some days in the office and occasional days out on site visits.
If you’re interested in this role – or know someone else who might be - we’ll be accepting applications until midnight on Tuesday 3rd October.
Job offers at Scottish Water are conditional, and will be confirmed on completion of our pre-employment screening, e.g. referencing, criminal record checks, license checks, etc. These checks are conducted on our behalf by a third party. Don’t worry - we’ll ask your permission before starting these checks.
Do you have any support needs?
Please let us know if there are any changes we can make to our application and selection process to make it easier and more comfortable for you. Email us here with the vacancy reference number in the subject line so we can work with you to support you throughout your application.
