      Summary

      The Project Planner plays a critical role in delivering high-impact planning solutions for municipal, regional, and private sector clients. This position is responsible for conducting comprehensive planning studies, drafting and implementing land use regulations, and providing technical leadership on projects involving zoning, economic development, transportation, and community planning. The Project Planner serves as a key liaison between internal teams, clients, and public stakeholders, providing guidance on land use policy, strategic planning, and community development.

      Essential Duties and Responsibilities

      • Lead and participate in the execution of complex planning projects, including general and comprehensive plan updates, zoning code revisions, housing needs assessments, corridor studies, economic development strategies, and master and area plans.
      • Lead and support mobility and transit planning studies, including first-last mile strategies, transit-oriented development (TOD), multimodal corridor plans, and active transportation network design
      • Conduct stakeholder engagement activities, including interviews, workshops, public meetings, and focus groups to gather insights for planning initiatives.
      • Provide independent counsel to city planning commissions, zoning boards, city councils, and other governing bodies.
      • Conduct demographic and market analysis, including population projections, land capacity assessments, economic trend evaluation, and scenario modeling.
      • Utilize GIS and data analysis tools to support planning decisions and create visualizations for client presentations.
      • Coordinate with transportation and infrastructure teams on projects involving travel demand modeling, traffic studies, and capacity analysis.
      • Prepare and review planning documents, including site plans, zoning amendments, development agreements, and technical reports.
      • Prepare and manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring alignment with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
      • Support business development efforts by helping to position the firm with clients, contributing to proposals, and identifying emerging opportunities.
      • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior planners and project team members.

      Education and Experience

      • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or related field.
      • 4 + years of relevant planning or engineering experience, preferably with a focus on municipal and regional planning.
      • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification preferred, or ability to obtain certification.
      • Advanced proficiency in office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GIS, additional experience with Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, or other design tools is a plus.
      • Strong understanding of zoning regulations, land use codes, and community development principles, and experience developing actionable outcomes.
      • Excellent communication skills, including public speaking, technical writing, and client presentations.
      • Proven ability to cultivate and maintain strong client relationships through proactive, responsive communication.
      • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
      • Experience supporting business development efforts, including proposal writing, client positioning, and identifying future project opportunities
