      PURPOSE OF POSITION:

      To provide a Computer Science/Computer Systems Engineering student intern with practical programming, computing, and network communication experience working on building, modifying, and maintaining systems beneficial to the Alaska Railroad Corporation. The intern will work with Communications & Signals staff on monitoring and outage recovery systems to automate basic tasks required to maintain the railroads network from Seward to Fairbanks. Existing experience with the type programming and systems we will work on is important but there will be plenty of opportunities to learn as well.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      Assists in developing scripts and software utilizing programming/scripting languages including python, JavaScript, BASH, and PowerShell.

      Configures and installs software on Linux, (Red Hat and Debian based), and Windows systems on data center infrastructure and field devices.

      Assists with software testing, cleaning data and other project tasks as needed.

      Develops documentation and training materials for Communications & Signals systems.

      Performs other duties as assigned


      FACTOR 1: Technical and Operational Knowledge

      Knowledge of basic computer science/system principles is required. Basic understanding of programming/scripting languages, specifically Python, JavaScript, BASH, and PowerShell, is expected. A base understanding of TCP/IP networking and how systems interact over a network is essential. Must have exposure to Linux/Windows operating systems including installation, administration, and maintenance. Ability to use MS Excel and MS Word is required. A base understanding of computing and monitoring hardware is beneficial.

      FACTOR 2: Analytical Skills and Impact

      Ability to explore and investigate software applications or hardware in order to develop documentation of features and procedures with a minimum of supervision. Can work carefully and completely with a given task and set of requirements. Demonstrates excellent verbal communication skills and an ability to deal with department customers as well as C&S staff. Has an excellent attention to detail and accuracy. Displays interest and capacity to learn new technology and skills.

      FACTOR 3: Supervision and Control

      This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities. The successful candidate works under the direction of the Manager, C&S Engineering to apply academic learning to the performance of network and signaling systems in an operational environment.

      FACTOR 4: Communication

      Contacts are with C&S personnel and other ARRC employees for the purpose of coordinating work assignments and performing day-to-day duties. The candidate will report issues and discrepancies to the Manager, C&S Engineering for resolution, and receives instructions as to how to handle situations.

      FACTOR 5: Working Conditions

      Position is located in Anchorage in a corporate office environment. Position may perform work in the field so must be willing to travel. Must have dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and mouse. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

      Education Requirements

      Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university in a curriculum leading to a degree in computer technology, programming or other related technical field and must have completed at least two years of undergraduate curriculum.

      Certification/License Requirements

      Valid driver’s license.
