      The Arlington County Government's Public Health Division in the Department of Human Services seeks a dynamic professional Registered Nurse (RN) Supervisor who is passionate about improving the lives of the residents by managing school health services for Arlington County Public Schools (APS) and the community. The employee is one of six Public Health Nurse Supervisors, providing supervision to a team of public health nurses and School Health Aides (approximately 10 employees), located in various school clinics throughout the County.

      The Public Health Nurse Supervisor (School Health) will focus on direct supervision of employees, assisting with health education and promotion, prevention of communicable diseases in the schools, quality improvement, quality assurance and other initiatives to improve the overall health of students, and their ability to access learning.

      Responsibilities include:
      • Supervising staff, including hiring, training assigning work, performance management, staff development, conflict resolution, and team-building;
      • Managing assigned programs efficiently and effectively by appropriately assigning staff and tasks to meet program needs; ensuring all resources are used appropriately; and completing special projects as assigned;
      • Working with the Arlington Public Schools (APS) leadership team, principals and staff on matters related to student health, clinic operations, school health policies and procedures, and coordination of response to disease outbreaks in schools;
      • Managing and contributing to various program efforts, including, researching and sharing relevant information on evidence-based practice, measuring results and performance, and utilizing research and data to recommend program and policy changes to improve delivery of school health services;
      • Contributing to the management of contracts and agreements by developing and implementing plans that meet budgetary goals and ensuring compliance with required standards by initiating and/or implementing quality assurance activities per applicable standards;
      • Developing and monitoring quality reports, completing required state reports, and utilizing results of reports to recommend program improvements; and
      • Representing the bureau and managing bureau programs by providing strong leadership and by developing and maintaining a collaborative, high-performance team.

      • Bachelor's degree in Nursing; and
      • Significant and progressively responsible experience as a Registered Nurse in general nursing, community, school health, pediatric or public health nursing, which included program administration or coordinating the work of others; and
      • Must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 60 days of hire. The Board of Nursing may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant who has been licensed as a professional nurse by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory.       Substitution: Additional directly related qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

      Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
      • Supervisory experience; and/or
      • Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field.
      Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver's license or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary worksite.

      A pre-employment background check will be conducted on candidates selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You will be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

      The candidate selected will be required to complete a State of Virginia Central Registry check.

      A valid certification in CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers or the ability to obtain such certifications prior to start date.

      The selected candidate will be required to submit to a tuberculosis skin test (also known as the tuberculin or PPD test) or tuberculosis blood test (also known as an IGRA).
      This salary is effective July 1, 2024

      Work hours:
      • Monday through Friday between the core hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
      • This is a year-round position.
      • Employee is based at 2110 Washington Blvd and travels throughout the County to provide onsite supervision at schools and some community sites.
      • Meetings and trainings will be held at the School Health Bureau's main office (2110 Washington Blvd.) or at other locations throughout Arlington County.
      • Occasional evening and weekend hours for other clinics, events, and meetings (locations may be throughout Arlington County).
      • Public Health Division employees are considered essential personal.
