- Develop and deliver internal and external communications that align with the strategic and operational direction of Barrow County. Coordinate County-wide communications on high profile matters such as public information campaigns, legislative communications, and responding to constituent concerns regarding programs and services.
- Ensure that communication with the news media is timely, accurate, and responsive. Initiate op-ed pieces, news releases, and other methods as necessary to ensure the organization's position on issues is put before the public.
- Collaborate with management on community relations projects, activities, and plans, and execute special events from a communications perspective. Communicate information to the public and perform community outreach and engagement.
- Facilitate and monitor communication activities via websites, social media, print media, and other venues, and utilize metrics to track the success of the communication efforts. Work with Information Technology and other departments as needed.
- Manage the development of a brand platform, and lead outreach and collaboration efforts with the County Manager, department directors, and other staff regarding the County's brand. Help ensure consistency, continuity, and effectiveness of communications, county-wide.
- BA/BS degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, Public Administration, or closely related field of study.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in public relations, journalism, communications, marketing and business, or public administration.
- Possession of a valid driver's license with good driving history.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of communications, and leveraging multiple communication tools for maximum effect
- Very comfortable with technology, including social media channels, web sites, and general office systems
- Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to influence internal customers and effectively establish and build partnerships with external customers and constituencies
- Review and analyze a variety of technical review comments on projects; respond effectively to a variety of changing situations; interpret, manage, and prepare budget information
- Demonstrated track record of being able to work with minimal supervision, delivering projects on time, on budget, and sensitive to the subject manner, extensive initiative, and independent judgment, and strong pro-active, positive leadership experience
- Ability to stay abreast of industry trends for communications and media relations
- Travel required from office to other locations on a regular basis.
- Positions in this class typically require: walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. While the majority of the work will be performed in an office setting, employee may occasionally need to visit project sites to verify project status.
- Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
The Public Information Officer will be responsible for providing timely and accurate information to the public. The incumbent will have broad responsibilities, county-wide, with respect to all aspects of external and internal communications to include maintaining proactive media relations, developing communications strategies and messages, and managing communications in a manner that promotes transparency, excellence, innovation, and alignment with overall goals to brand the organization and ensure clear messaging to the community. Position will assist with developing and presenting quarterly and annual reports to the Commission and Community, and other special communication requirements as assigned by the County Manager.
