      Overview

      Macalester College is seeking a Public Safety Manager of Technology. This position requires prior experience directing staff in a security or law enforcement setting. The candidate must possess strong communication and problem-solving skills along with the ability to interact well with others. In addition, the candidate must be well versed in the management and operation of security technology including CCTV, access control and records management systems. Prior experience in higher education is desirable along with familiarity with the Clery Act, Title IX, and local, state and federal laws, especially those related to Colleges and Universities.

      The manager will supervise both professional and student staff including the development of operating policies, work review, and performance management. The manager will respond to emergency and routine calls for service as needed and assist with investigations as assigned.

      This is a full-time position with a four day on and four day off schedule. Working hours for the role will be Noon to 10pm.

      About The Department:

      The Department of Public Safety provides security services and emergency response on campus and develops and maintains the campus Emergency Operations Plan, a broad plan that establishes response protocol and a chain of command for emergencies that threaten the health and safety of the campus community or that disrupt its programs and activities. The plan covers emergencies ranging from natural disasters to terrorist attacks and conforms to state and federal regulations. The plan is reviewed and updated as situations, threats, and resources change.

      Responsibilities

      • Manage security technology systems and equipment (card access, cameras, alarms, etc.)-includes troubleshooting, assisting end users, managing installation and repair projects, and reviewing technology requests.
      • Manage Public Safety dispatch operations, including, but not limited to, managing staff and student staff, developing operating policies and procedures, and performance management.
      • Assist with the departmental administrative functions-this includes, but is not limited to, developing policies and procedures, budget preparation and monitoring, managing public safety uniforms and equipment.
      • While on duty, respond to routine and emergency calls for service, safety and security concerns of community members. Assisting community members and visitors understand campus policies and procedures to ensure compliance.
      • Act as shift supervisor while on duty-supervise and direct daily activity of public safety staff- Reviews security logs, incident reports, and events generated during shift, classifying reports for Clery purposes, disseminating reports as appropriate, lead during incident responses, conduct initial and follow up investigations.
      • Provide support for operational tasks-scheduling, payroll, and performance management
      • Engages in and promotes Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status or orientation.

      Qualifications

      • Bachelor’s Degree preferred but, not required. Candidates with over 5 years of experience will be considered without the degree
      • Experience directing the work security or law enforcement staff. Should have knowledge and prior experience managing an organizations security program and security systems (CCTV and card access). Must understand laws pertaining to security and boundaries between security and law enforcement. Previous experience in a higher education institution in a similar role and understand of Clery act preferred.
      • Knowledge of security protocols and hazards. Experience training others in security protocols.
      • Ability to anticipate/solve problems based on prior experience, information and/or changes to laws/regulations. Problem solving and solution implementation.
      • Assignments require high level of judgment, initiative, creative approaches to trouble shooting and the ability to make recommendations on improvement. Some project management.
      • Microsoft Office and relevant technology related to functioning in role. Must be able to operate and understand the card access software, the CCTV system, the incident alert/radio system and understand the architecture of the hardware.
      • Operate the card access, CCTV, and incident alert systems, Motor vehicles, Public Safety equipment
      • Strong communication skills, both in written and oral formats. Good interpersonal skills. The ability to interact, consult and influence employees, staff and customers both internally and externally.

      Compensation:

      The annual salary for this position will be $55,000-$60,000, depending on experience.
