      This position supports the Operations & Maintenance Department and provides for the operation, repair, and maintenance of the City's streets, parks, water, sanitary and storm sewer systems and other associated infrastructures. Provides high levels of customer service to both internal and external customers. Coordinates with vendors and contractors for the completion of projects. Procures needed supplies for daily operations.

      • Perform tree and landscape maintenance to include: pruning, removal, planting, mulching, and inspecting
      • Perform turf maintenance to include: mowing, trimming, irrigation, fertilization, herbicide application, seeding, and aeration in and around parks and recreational facilities
      • Perform athletic field and court maintenance to include: dragging, lining, painting and chalking, and field layout
      • Perform limited plumbing, painting, carpentry and other general maintenance work on park and recreation buildings and facilities
      • Perform snow and ice control operations, with primary responsibility to plow sidewalks; may also assist with ice rinks, trails, streets and parking lots.
      • Provide assistance with vehicle and equipment maintenance
      • Provide assistance in emergency or essential operations to all divisions including streets and utility maintenance divisions
      • Provide work direction to smaller crews & seasonal employees
      • Other duties as assigned or apparent
      Education
      High school graduate or equivalent

      Experience
      • Must be at least 18 years of age
      • One (1) year of experience in equipment operation and general equipment maintenance for a maintenance operation
      Licenses/Certifications
      • Valid driver's license at time of hire.
      • Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class “B” driver's license within 12 months of hire.
      • Ability to obtain a Minnesota Class “A” driver's license within 2 years of hire.
      • Ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Aid certification within 2 years of hire.
      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Ability to comprehend and execute written and oral instructions
      • Ability to be cross-trained in the streets and utility maintenance divisions
      • Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks in one or more of the following divisions: Park Maintenance, Street Maintenance, and Utility Maintenance
      • Ability to meet physical demands of the job, including but not limited to lifting, bending, climbing, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling
      • Ability to lift, carry, push, pull 26-60lbs frequently and over 60lbs occasionally
      • Ability to perform job responsibilities in climatic extremes common to Minnesota
      • Proven ability and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace related to racial equity, diversity and inclusion.
      • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
      • Ability to successfully complete a physical examination, including passing a drug test

      Desired Qualifications
      • Valid Minnesota Class "A" of "B" driver's license
      • Successful completion of postsecondary coursework in turf and landscape technology
      • Two (2)+ years of experience in equipment operation
      • Two (2)+ years of experience in park or turf maintenance
      • Two (2)+ years of experience in municipal public works maintenance
      • Certifications in tree inspector, pesticide applicator, playground inspector or low voltage technician
      • Familiar with computers and computer programs including Microsoft Office Suite and other office-related equipment
      • Familiar with GIS data collection equipment
      • Ability to read and understand construction plans
      • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Laotian or Vietnamese language(s)

      Equivalency
      An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

      Union Representation
      This position is represented by a collective bargaining agreement between the City of Brooklyn Park and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local No. 49.

      Background Check
      The City has determined that a criminal background check and/or qualifications check are necessary for this job title.       Drug & Alcohol Testing/Medical Examination
      All job applicants must pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test/medical examination once a conditional offer of employment has been made. Applicants will be required to sign a notification and consent form prior to undergoing drug and alcohol testing. Applicants who do not consent to undergo drug and alcohol testing will not be required to do so and the City will withdraw the conditional job offer, resulting in the job applicant no longer being considered for the position

      Selection Process
      The selection process will consist of one or more of the following steps: a rating of relevant education and experience and/or an oral examination (100%). It is important that your application show all the relevant education and experience you possess. This information will be used to determine which candidates will proceed in the selection process. A submitted application is also used to verify the answers to any supplemental questions. Only those candidates who attain a passing score (70%) on each step in the selection process will be placed on the eligible list. Human Resources Department reserves the right to limit the number in any phase of the selection process.

      Department/Division: Operations & Maintenance/Park Maintenance

      Anticipated Work Schedule: Full-time, non-exempt, union position; standard work hours are 6:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Work week schedule may include 8 or 10 hour days on Saturday and Sunday, April through October, if assigned.

      Anticipated Hiring Wage: This job title is a part of a city-wide compensation study and the salary range is under review. $29.42 per hour, plus full-time employee benefit package per Local 49 labor agreement (https://www.brooklynpark.org/work-for-brooklyn-park/labor-agreements/) benefits package
