      TOWN OF TRUMBULL

      PUBLIC WORKS SUPERVISOR

      HIGHWAY & PARKS

      GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

      1. Directs, instructs and guides work crews in the performance of skilled and unskilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of roadways, roadsides, sewer lines, both storm and sanitary, etc.

      2. Supervises the operation of mechanical equipment, such as graders, rollers, payloaders, sewer machines, compressors, jackhammers, saws, scoop buckets, power pick-up sweepers, wing and rotary snow plows, etc.

      3. Supervises the building of manholes and catch basins and the laying of drainage pipe, etc.

      4. Assists in planning, scheduling, assigning and reviewing the work of highway and park employees.

      5. May be required to fill in as the Supervisor of Solid Waste and Recycling.

      6. Participates in the established grievance procedures, recommends effective personnel actions and maintains harmonious relations with employees and the public.

      7. Ensures proper use and maintenance of all equipment by workers.

      8. Works in all kinds of weather.

      9. Instructs and guides personnel in the proper methods and procedures to follow in performing their assigned tasks.

      10. Willing to learn and apply appropriate technology for the position.

      11. Observing and enforcing all OSHA safety requirements

      12. May perform light surveying work including working from drawings, job layout, and setting elevations.

      13. Performs miscellaneous related duties as required.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

      1. Ability to supervise the performance of necessary manual skills and operation of mechanical equipment required in assigned operations.

      2. Considerable knowledge of maintenance, repair and construction of roadways, sewers and drains and the materials necessary to accomplish same.

      3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

      4. Ability to follow complex oral and written instructions.

      5. Knowledge of basic computer skills preferred.

      6. Must possess current valid CDL, Class B.

      7. Considerable knowledge of and the ability to apply OSHA regulations, policies, rules, precautions and practices to promote a safe work environment and avoid injuries to personnel and equipment.

      EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

      HS Grad with six (6) years employment in the highway or construction field of which three (3) years shall have been in a supervisory capacity.

      Safety and OSHA certification preferred

      SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

      Works under the direction of the General Foreman (Highway), Superintendent of Parks and Rec (Parks), or designee.

      SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

      Supervises Highway and Park Maintainers, Equipment Operators and other assigned personnel.



      This position shall be open to all permanent full time UPSEU Non-Supervisory Highway & Parks Union Employees & UPSEU DPW Supervisors Union Employees who have completed at least (1) one year of service and who meet the qualifications and Experience and Training as contained in the posted job description.

      GENERAL INFORMATION ON THIS EXAMINATION WEIGHTS

      • The weights of the examination will be 45% experience and training and 45% employee performance history and 10% longevity.

      Each candidate must have had the required experience and training to be eligible for this examination which include: HS Grad with six (6) years employment in the highway or construction field of which three (3) years shall have been in a supervisory capacity. Safety and OSHA certification preferred

      Before final certification, each applicant must successfully pass a physical examination attesting to physical ability to perform the duties involved.

      Each candidate must attain the passing grade on each phase in order to be eligible for continued competition. This examination will be conducted for the Town of Trumbull by the Trumbull Civil Service Board within the authority of Section 7-413 of the 1959 revision of the State of CT. Please notify the Civil Service office in advance of the examination of any disability which may require special accommodation. Anyone claiming Veterans' Preference must bring original DD 214 document.
