      Job description:

      Overall Job Purpose:
      The pump attendant will be responsible for the operation and monitoring of dewatering pumps and related equipment to ensure a steady and reliable water pumping rate and pressure. The pump attendant will also assist the dewatering team in the handling, operation and all areas of dewatering, piping and pumping systems.

      Specific Job Responsibilities:

      • Pump Operation: Start, stop and adjust water pumps based on water abstraction demand, system requirements, and established schedules.
      • Monitoring: Continuously monitor pump performance, water pressure, flow rates, and other relevant indicators to ensure proper operation and address any anomalies promptly.
      • Maintenance and Repairs: Identify and troubleshoot issues and clearly report situation to the maintenance teams.
      • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure the safe operation of pumps and related equipment.
      • Data Recording: Maintain accurate records of pump operations, flows, maintenance activities, and any incidents. Keep detailed logs of pump performance, maintenance schedules, and any repairs carried out.
      • Emergency Response: Report pump malfunctions or breakdowns promptly, taking appropriate actions to minimize downtime and restore water supply.
      • Communication: Collaborate with supervisors, engineers, and other team members to coordinate pump operations and repairs.
      • Efficiency Improvements: Suggest and implement measures to improve the efficiency of pump operations, reduce energy consumption, and optimize water abstraction.
      • Documentation: Complete reports and documentation related to pump operations, maintenance activities, refueling, water-levels and any incidents for reporting and analysis.
      • Assist in installations of pipes and pumps.
      • Perform prestart checklists, lubrication and fuel top ups as required.
      • Ensure cleanliness of the pumps and pumping areas.

      Job Specific Competencies:

      • Knowledge of staged-pumping systems and the startup as well as balancing of the pumping systems.
      • Ability to identify unplanned repairs & installation tasks on plant equipment with pumping and piping systems within dewatering area.
      • Mechanical aptitude and understanding of pumps and motors.
      • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot pump malfunctions and tweak pumps for operational requirements and water-levels.
      • Ability to use basic hand tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs.
      • Knowledge of safety procedures and practices in water pumping operations.
      • Effective communication skills to collaborate with team members and report on pump performance.
      • Physical fitness and the ability to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
      • Goods swimmer – proximity to sumps and water-bodies.

      Experience & Qualifications:

      • Proven experience with large electric as well as diesel pumping and piping systems in the open pit dewatering environment, unplanned minor repair & installation competency for tasks on plant equipment is advantageous.
      • Full grade 12 certificate.
