      Description

      The QA Inspector performs In-Bound, In-Process & Final Inspections of Freight cars and or Tank cars. The QA Inspector is also responsible to ensure inspection and maintenance is conducted in a safe and quality manner. The purpose of this position is to ensure the railcar or tank car is maintained and returns to service in compliance with owners, regulatory, and industry standards/specifications. The onsite QA Manager, Facility Manager or his designee will approve and qualify the QA Inspector.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      The essential duties and responsibilities are listed below. Other duties may be assigned.

      • Perform Incoming, In Process, and Final Inspections on Railcars with adherence to FRA, AAR, and Client specifications.
      • Collaborate with Facility Manager, QA Supervisor, or Production Supervisor on any AAR requirements or QA concerns that affect the quality of work performed to railcars.
      • Has the authority to make disposition decisions for any non-conforming equipment, product or repaired items or services, subject to verification by the Quality Assurance Supervisor
      • Complies with company's Safety Program by following all in house and OSHA rules, regulations, and procedures.
      • QA M-1003 Program and Manual training to be completed within 90 days of employment
      • Certification to Company In-process, Final & In-Bound Inspection Training Matrix is required for full QA Inspector Certification (up to 2 years to complete)
      • Must be Railcar Repair Technician III qualified
      • Must be knowledgeable of the AAR Repair procedures and requirements.
      • Integrates quality functions into a multi-discipline work environment
      • Adheres to budgets, schedules, performance standards as provided by Senior Management
      • Is responsible for performing Inspections at assigned facility and capable of supporting the Quality program at multiple operating facilities as needed.
      • Adheres to the standards of the Quality Program for assigned location to ensure delivery of a quality product to ARS customers.
      • Perform facility level Quality Program and customer specification training for new and existing employees
      • Mentor QA Inspector candidates to the Quality Inspector Training Matrix

      • High School diploma or equivalent
      • Reads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and ARS Specifications, Client specifications and arrangement drawings.
      • Writes routine reports and correspondence and speaks effectively.
      • Math Skills: Works with simple mathematical concepts.
      • Reasoning Ability: Solves practical problems.
      • The duties of this job require fully passing the fitness for duty examination
      • Ability to pass pre-employment physical
      • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens

      Physical Demands & Work Environment

      Except for clerical, administrative, and some management positions, which require indoor work, the physical environment requires our employees to work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, dry/arid and dusty conditions. The environment requires working in close proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, in high and low precarious places, confined spaces.

      The work type is best described as heavy, hands-on mechanical work. Work is very physical, and without proper work planning can result in out of position pushing, pulling and lifting. Proper body mechanics, positioning and lifting techniques can be very important. Employees are urged to seek help when needed with heavier tasks, and to use lifting equipment where necessary. The positioning of the work being performed can change very frequently.

      Tools used: Various heavier air and electric powered tools are used, such as car jacks, impact wrenches, and grinders are used daily. Work also requires frequent use of hand wrenches, hammers, chisels, socket wrenches, and ladders. Cutting torches are also used, arc gougers, plasma cutters along with welding equipment used upon qualification of employee.

      • Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, smelling and visual acuity, with color and depth perception
      • Ability to work in a confined space
      • Required to use personal protective equipment as environmental conditions dictate
