Job Description
Responsibilities:
Drive continuous improvement in Food Safety and Quality Assurance by supporting bakery team goals and key performance indicators (KPIs).
Set challenging, reasonable performance expectations for microbiological performance, foreign material control, regulatory compliance, and Food Safety Plan programs.
Responsible for the selection, motivation, and development of food safety and quality assurance personnel to ensure all positions are effectively staffed and managed. Reviews progress with Human Resources regularly and conducts formal performance evaluations, recommending developmental training as needed.
Implement and improve standardized food safety and quality assurance policies, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls (HARPC), and the Integrated Management System (AIMS). Maintain documentation in ETQ and develop strategies for business improvement.
Communicate Quality and Food Safety objectives to bakery management and operations teams clearly.
Provide training on quality, food safety, and basic food hygiene practices to bakery and Central Service personnel.
Review root cause analysis and corrective actions for all nonconformances at the bakery level and those communicated by customers, supporting bakery management in resolving issues and preventing recurrence.
Verify completion of sensory evaluation reviews and identify quality improvement opportunities for bakery teams.
Conduct independent assessments of food safety, GMP, and bakery hygiene gaps at bakeries, distribution centers, and supplier locations as needed.
Monitor and oversee bakery FSQA budgets in collaboration with bakery controllers.
Support preparation for and lead during customer and third-party audits.
Support bakery teams in implementing AIMS programs and ETQ compliance platform, ensuring FSQA compliance calendars are completed.
Update and review Food Safety Plans regularly to include current GMP practices, prerequisite programs, Process Preventive Controls, Allergen Preventive Controls, Sanitation Preventive Controls, and Supply Chain Controls.
Assist bakery Food Safety (HARPC) team in evaluating and implementing controls for biological, chemical, physical, and economically motivated hazards, including defect action limits, hygienic zoning, and by-product controls.
Ensure effective implementation of the bakery Recall and Traceability Program.
Understand and lead bakery teams in complying with all applicable food regulations (international, state, and local) and interact effectively with regulatory personnel.
Lead efforts to meet Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) standards (e.g., BRC), recertification processes, and preparations for customer and third-party audits.
Interface with key customers to maintain and enhance the companys reputation as a supplier of quality foods.
Investigate customer/consumer complaints using root cause analysis, implement corrective and preventive actions, respond within required timeframes, and analyze trends for continuous improvement.
Support new food development by ensuring controls and inspections are in place for successful product launches.
Additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology, Chemistry, Food Technology, or Food Science, or sufficient experience in the food industry to meet technical skill requirements.
Minimum of 5 years of comprehensive food processing, food safety, and quality experience, with extensive background in manufacturing, HACCP, USDA, or FDA regulations.
Training in HACCP (Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points).
Certified in a GFSI standard such as BRC or SQF; previous experience with GFSI, BRC, SQF, and/or USDA audits is desirable.
Knowledge of microbiology sampling, methods, and interpretation; food hygiene, hygienic zoning, cGMPs, and environmental monitoring.
Strong writing, statistical (SPC and charting), analytical, and critical thinking skills.
Proficient in spreadsheets, statistical programs, and SAP applications.
Salary Range: $93,000 - $115,000
