      Req#: 18097
The team you'll be part of

Bell Labs Quantum Computing Research is a part of the AI Research Lab, which has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of 80 staff members with expertise ranging from computer science to experimental condensed matter physics. Our Quantum Computing Research team is actively developing topological qubits, the fundamental building block of future scalable quantum computers. This effort has a long history at Bell Labs dating back to the discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect in the 1980’s.

Our experimental efforts are supported by state-of-the-art nanofabrication and low-temperature testing facilities at our Murray Hill, NJ headquarters. This includes in-house ebeam lithography, photolithography, material deposition, die-level processing and packaging, and imaging equipment along with a suite of wet and dry dilution refrigerators and high-speed, low-noise test and measurement equipment.

      Qualifications

      You have:

      • A PhD (or in the final stages of a PhD Program) in electrical engineering, condensed matter physics, or a related field.
      • Micro/nano fabrication expertise, including e-beam lithography, material deposition, and metrology.
      • Excellent oral / written communication skills.
      • A desire to learn new things and work in a fast-paced and dynamic team.

It would be nice if you also had experience with:

      • Material processing of GaAs or similar III-V semiconductors.
      • Topological quantum systems, especially knowledge of the fractional quantum hall effect.
      • Design, fabrication, or testing of devices that operate in a cryogenic environment.

      Responsibilities

You will work with and learn from world experts in topological quantum computing and contribute to our current path toward the realization of a topological qubit. You will work closely with teammates in a fast-paced and dynamic environment, leveraging your expertise in semiconductor processing for the design and fabrication of quantum devices. The successful applicant will:

Be responsible for overseeing the maintenance and operation of nanofabrication equipment and facilities.
Develop and execute novel nanofabrication methods required for the creation of topological qubit devices.
Conduct high-quality research in topological quantum computing and its applications.
Be an active member of the quantum computing community and related fields, and improve over current state-of-the-art methods.
Present research findings through papers and oral presentations both within the organization and to the external research community.

  • About the company

Nokia’s transition to a primary focus on telecommunications began in the 1990s. The first GSM call was made in 1991 using Nokia equipment. Rapid success in the mobile phone sector allowed Nokia to become by 1998, the best-selling mobile phone brand in the world. In 2003 Nokia introduced the first camera phone. In 2011, to address increasing competition from iOS and Android operating systems, Nokia entered into a strategic partnership with Microsoft. In 2014 Nokia sold its mobile and devices division to Microsoft. The creation of Nokia Networks, following the buy-out of joint-venture partner Siemens in 2013, laid the foundation for Nokia’s transformation into primarily a network hardware and software provider. The 2015 acquisition of Franco-American telecommunications equipment provider Alcatel-Lucent greatly broadened the scope of Nokia’s portfolio and customer base. Additional acquisitions have positioned Nokia to be an industry leader in the transition to 5G wireless technology by offering the only end-to-end 5G network portfolio available on a global basis. In 2016 the Nokia brand re-entered the mobile handset market through a licensing agreement with HMD Global, allowing them to offer phones under the Nokia brand.
