- Investigate and evaluate new technologies and sensors. Work with internal teams to evaluate and select components and new technologies for the smart-glasses of the future considering requirements related to architecture (performance, power consumption), production (quality, failure analysis, manufacturing), development (schematic design and review, PCB layout, and system integration), etc.. A basic knowledge of sensors for biomedical applications and eye-tracking technologies are preferred.
- Designing hardware for wearable technology and sensors. Electronics hw design and develop innovative embedded hardware solutions for moderately complex analog, digital, or RF circuits for products, including simulations, schematics, PCB layout, and validation.
- System integration. Wearable/IoT/Smart devices rapid prototyping and feasibility assessment. Prototypes bring up and debugging, functional verification, signal characterization, hardware bug tracking.
- HW sensor verification & validation . Create system specifications and plan validation of designs. Lead complete functional verification, signal characterization, power modeling/test, and system coexistence testing. Operate internal data collection activities for HW sensor verification & validation; operate signal processing and analysis methods for collected data; Develop new test Methods and tools for HW testing; Execute HW tests in lab and field environments.
- Educational Background in Electronics or Electrical Engineering or equivalent
- At least 2/3 years of experience in consumer electronics/embedded system design
- Solid experience in Electronics/Firmware/Software Design of Sensors
- Experience in embedded systems, processor selection, various communication protocols, analog design, sensor design, low power system design, RF, and Printed Circuit Board (PCB)/Flex technologies
- Experience with power, performance, and cost optimization - taking into account multiple factors within a design including power consumption, weight, battery life, processing speed, data transmission capability, self-diagnostics etc
- Experience in system integration with software development from firmware through system level
- Experience in a lab-based environment, prototype bring-up, debugging, functional verification, and manufacturing support and demonstrated ability with electrical engineering tools (multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, simulation tools, schematic capture / PCB layout tools, etc.)
- Proven knowledge in C/C++ embedded programming.
- Experience in assembly and low level programming.
- Experience with microcontrollers, SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, USB.
- Fluent English
- Knowledge of various sensors from manufacturers such as Invensense, ST Micro, Honeywell, Bosch and others
- Experience with designing small form factor wearable products or previous work with embedded circuit design for consumer products
- Experience working on multiple simultaneous development projects
- Experience trouble-shooting complex problems on embedded systems
- Italian is a plus

The Smart Eyewear LAB, a pioneering project in heart of Milan
The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear LAB is the first joint research centre ever between EssilorLuxottica and Politecnico di Milano aimed at designing the smart-glasses of the future, a new generation of wearables which are capable of autonomous network connection. It is a pioneering project that will enable the development of new technologies and services using a widely used interface such as eyewear.
The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab in Milan will work as part of the EssilorLuxottica Group’s R&D platform, which is already operating globally. The EssilorLuxottica Smart Eyewear Lab will initially last five years and will employ over 100 enthusiastic and talented researchers and scientists working closely together in a dedicated space within the Innovation District in Milan.

In this context, we are looking for a highly motivated hardware engineer, working closely with the research teams from Politecnico di Milano and EssilorLuxottica Werable R&D colleagues to enable new functionalities in smart glasses through the design and integration of miniaturized sensors taking into account multiple factors within a design.
In particular, the hardware engineer will be included in the eye-tracking and/or camera and sensors research stream of the Smart Eyewear Lab.
