      Position Highlights

      The Department of Steward Observatory seeks to fill the position of an R & D Mechanical Engineer IV. The selected candidate will apply known mechanical engineering theories and principals in support of the goals of University of Arizona’s Principal Investigators and their programs. The mechanical engineer will support scientific research in ground and space-based instruments and telescopes and will work closely with other engineering disciplines on various development teams. The candidate will be periodically directed in several aspects of the work which includes analysis, concept generation, design, survival and performance trade studies, fabrication, budgetary and detail cost estimations, and product verification. Specifically, the Mechanical Engineer will use CAD, FEM, structural and thermal analysis software to analyze and design components to meet the structural and the thermal requirements in support of space and ground based telescope and telescope instrumentation missions during the project’s conceptual and preliminary design phases. The Mechanical Engineer will refine concepts and create detailed designs and support fabrication, integration and testing in the later project phases.

      Duties & Responsibilities
      • Acts as the project team’s lead mechanical engineer providing input to other project team members, namely, optical, electrical, software, systems and control, and integration and testing.
      • Provide guidance to and coordination with other engineers, the mechanical design drafting group, technicians, and other skilled trades.
      • May lead other mechanical engineers both within a particular development project and across various development projects.
      • May communicate directly with project’s Project Manager and Project Principal Investigator in proposing cost effective solutions through all phases of development.
      • Identifies complex operating and design problems and implements solutions.
      • Analyze and designs major mechanical components of projects. Considers cost, schedule, and performance tradeoffs in design, such as selection of COTS, materials, and suppliers.
      • Provides support and design checks of other mechanical engineer’s designs and analysis on mechanical systems, components and hardware design using hand calculations, CAD and FEM software.
      • Oversees and or directs fabrication and implementation of mechanical hardware and verifies performance and functionality through testing.
      • As a lead mechanical engineer on a particular project, be responsible to take the project’s hardware from the design phase through production and delivery.
      • Tracks labor and material resources, requisition of materials, supplies and equipment. Supports and generates technical reports and presents at formal design reviews.
      • Additional duties as assigned.
      Minimum Qualifications
      • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent discipline, AND at least 8 years of relevant work experience required.
      • Ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy .
      Preferred Qualifications
      • Master's degree in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering.
      • Experience with space or ground based telescope and instrumentation design.
      • Experience in SolidWorks or other equivalent design packages.
      • Experience in ANSYS or other equivalent analysis packages.
      • Experience with large optics handling.
      • Hands on experience with integrating, testing and verification of telescope instrumentation.
      • Arizona Professional Engineer license.
