      About this role

      The Polyurethanes Energy Efficiency and Furniture & Bedding (EE&FB) Application Development and Technical Service (AD&TS) team has an opening for a R&D/TS&D Technician role, located in Freeport, Texas. The EE&FB AD&TS team leads the development, testing and commercialization of new products for the Polyurethanes business in North America for a variety of insulation and consumer comfort applications. The candidate will work with a group of technologists in the Polyurethanes laboratories to align with project leaders to deliver product formulations, characterization and eventual commercialization in rigid and flexible foam technologies.

      In this role, you will be using your prior related experience, job-related training, or vocational training to complete assigned laboratory activities. You will possess a safety-first mindset and a high ethical standard. You will need to have basic technical and administrative skills to follow the established and approved work processes. You will need to understand how these assigned duties relate to other jobs within your workgroup and be able to exchange basic technical information with other team members.

      It is your responsibility to fully understand and use standard operating procedures and/or established analytical/scientific methods to address R&D problems of real-world interest to Dow. You must have the ability to select solutions from established options to resolve typical laboratory, data organization, and data coordination problems. You will be accountable for managing your assigned workload with no additional supervisory responsibilities, and to communicate clearly the progress and results of your work. Your performance impacts the quality of your own work as well as your team’s work. Once established, you will receive moderate level of supervision and guidance in this role.



      Responsibilities – Duties, projects, tasks, and activities you would be responsible for in this role

      • Heavy Machine Operation
      • Works as part of a team in a laboratory supporting chemists and engineers in developing, screening and commercializing new products and process
      • Support/Lead operation of large slab foam machine.
      • Train/Operate high and low pressure foaming machine and support customer trial work.
      • Prepare formulation blends for machine runs.
      • Train/Operate box foaming machine.
      • Band Saw operation
      • After primary skills are learned, there is a high expectation to cross train into other areas of the lab to relieve bottlenecks and improve lab efficiency. This will be used as a performance factor of initiative and teamwork for reviews.
      • Analytical Support
      • Train and qualify to fulfill role as the backup for testing lab technician (rigids and flex foam) which includes small scale machinery and preliminary testing.
      • Generate cup foams and complete preliminary cup foam data (Gel time, tack free time, Skin cure mold testing)
      • Employee will also be responsible for communicating when supplies need ordering to keep sampling turn around optimal
      • Trash/ Scrap generation is routine and large amounts of foam are moved in and out of the lab.
      • Safety training is ongoing and kept up to date using the Diamond Learning tool. The employee will be expected to attend quarterly building safety meetings and participate in a monthly safety committee and adhere to quality standards applicable to business.
      • Warehouse material ordering, sorting and arranging. Shipping and handling of internal and external customer samples is expected.
      • Waste stream chemical handling (Collecting, draining and storage in building)
      • Forklift operation


      Qualifications

      • A minimum of a High School Diploma or another GED equivalent.
      • A minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience (heavy lab or production).
      • A minimum requirement for this US-based position is the ability to work legally in the United States on a permanent basis. No visa sponsorship/support is available for this position, including for any type of U.S. permanent residency (green card) process.

      • Equipment Maintenance - Mechanically inclined

      • Multi-tasking - Complete multiple tasks and see them through completion.
      • Organizing, planning, and prioritizing work - the individual should have the ability to determine their own day-to-day schedule without set guidance

      • Proactive Problem Solving - The individual must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and react quickly to evolving and dynamic production scheduling situations, with minimum supervision.

      • Time management - it is essential that the individual should have the ability to prioritize their workload depending on significance and deadline

      Physical Requirements

      This position requires the routine use of safety glasses, lab coats, gloves, and other personal protective equipment as determined by the laboratory activities being performed. Some roles may also entail some additional physical demands, such as:

      • Wear safety equipment, such as earplugs, goggles, and steel-toed shoes.

      • Wear and use respirators.

      • Perform frequent bending, reaching, and lifting.

      • Work in tight or closed-in spaces.

      • Climb stairs/ladders and work at heights.

      • Stand or walk for extended periods of time.

      • Lift a maximum of 50 lbs.
