      Position Statement

      Under general direction of the Site Superintendent, directs and participates in maintenance, operational and program support tasks at Hidden Springs State Forest.

      Job Responsibilities

      1. Under general direction of the Site Superintendent, directs and participates in maintenance, operational and program support tasks at Hidden Springs State Forest:

      • Directs and participates in trail and fire lane construction and maintenance.
      • Directs and participates in operation of bulldozers, backhoes, tree spades, aerial lifts, chippers, stump cutters, skid stere with forestry head, and endloaders.
      • Constructs and repairs stairways/bridges, changing broken treads and handrails.
      • Adds water bars to prevent erosion and clearing of fallen trees.
      • Conducts trail inspections as scheduled.
      • Transports equipment using a truck having a GVWR of 16,500 pounds with a 20’ flatbed trailer with a GVWR of 20,000 pounds with Air Brakes.
      • Makes repairs to roads including patching and gravel.
      • Participates in wildlife farming programs.

      2. Serves as working supervisor:

      • Assigns and reviews work.
      • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
      • Counsels staff regarding work performance.
      • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
      • Establishes annual goals and objectives.
      • Approves time off.
      • Prepares and signs performance evaluations.

      3. Assists in implementing safety and security programs at the site:

      • Inspects public use areas for hazards such as flooding, fallen trees, erosion, broken picnic tables, and road washouts.
      • Assists in the rescue of injured or stranded complex visitors.
      • Contacts proper authorities in emergency or disturbance situations.
      • Provides visitors with assistance and information on site programs, rules, and regulations.
      • Reports public health and safety hazards to supervisor.
      • Assures buildings and gates are properly locked.
      • Administers First Aid/CPR.
      • Completes incident reports.
      • Performs traffic control.

      4. Directs and participates in the maintenance of site grounds and facilities:

      • Removes trash from barrels and park grounds.
      • Cleans and disinfects toilets and shelters to include sweeping and mopping.
      • Mows the park area using riding mowers, tractors with bushhog.
      • Plows and shovels snow.
      • Participates in controlled burns.
      • Applies herbicides and pesticides.
      • Clears shrubs, brush, trees using chainsaw, mower, weed eater, other hand tools.

      5. Oversees the maintenance of park vehicles and equipment:

      • Conducts general tune-up of points, plugs, condenser, oil/filter changes, greasing and lubrication.
      • Sharpens and balances mower blades.
      • Replaces worn parts to include mower shafts, bearings, starters, fuel pumps, alternators, hydraulic pumps, cylinders, sprockets, pulleys, and belts.
      • Makes repairs on site vehicles and equipment to include mowers.
      • Prepares, schedules, and maintains vehicle maintenance records.
      • Completes monthly fuel reconciliation.
      • Washes and waxes vehicles.

      6. Oversees construction of prefab toilets, shelters, concrete floors, wood burning stoves, information, and directional signs:

      • Directs and participates in carpentry projects.
      • Builds forms for concrete.
      • Repairs and paints picnic tables, stoves/grills.
      • Makes minor repairs to plumbing, heating/air conditioning, and/or electrical systems.
      • Constructs and maintains fences.
      • Re-roofs buildings.

      7. Directs and participates in the camping and hunting programs:

      • Sells camping and firewood collecting permits.
      • Collects fees.
      • Signs up large groups.
      • Takes reservations for four shelters and group camping area.
      • Collects and reports attendance.
      • Makes bank deposits.
      • Assists with interpretive duties.
      • Registers hunters.

      8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the
      duties enumerated above.

      Minimum Requirements

      1. Requires education and experience equivalent to an associate's degree with courses in life sciences or parks and recreation supplemented by one year of maintenance or interpretive experience. Note: experience may be substituted for some education, but completion of high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate is a minimum educational requirement.

      Preferred Qualifications

      1. Two (2) years of elementary knowledge of outdoor recreational and natural program administration.
      2. One (1) year of experience preparing and maintaining operating records and reports.
      3. Two (2) years of experience assigning tasks, directing and reviewing the work of subordinate staff.
      4. Two (2) years of experience making minor repairs to tools and equipment used in the performance of non-skilled and/or semiskilled maintenance.
      5. One (1) year of experience providing information, direction, and assistance to sports enthusiasts and the public.

      Employment Conditions

      2. Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with Air Brakes
      3. Ability to obtain an appropriate water and/or wastewater treatment operator's certification within 6 months of employment
      4. Ability to obtain pesticide operator's license within 6 months of employment
      5. Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year-round basis
      6. Physical ability to operate and maintain tools, equipment, and materials utilized in the maintenance, repair, and care of site resources, buildings, and grounds
      7. Ability to lift, carry, and transport loads exceeding 60 pounds
      8. Ability to walk over rough and broken terrain.

OLM facilitates activities from small group interpretive programming at Historical Sites, to hiking, hunting, fishing, boating, and camping.

      Work Hours: 7:30AM-3:30PM, 30 min lunch, Sept 1-Mar 31 / Mon-Fri, rotating every other month to weekends off, Wed-Thurs, Apr 1-Aug 31.
