Recording Studio Engineer

The Recording Studio Engineer oversees the daily operations of the recording studio and sound mix/screening room within the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts, supporting faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students and curriculum that spans the theatre, film studies and moving image production majors and minors. Collaborates with faculty in the Department of Theatre, Film, and Media Arts, to train and assist students on safe and appropriate use of equipment; performs technical and administrative functions related to the studio and lab, including personnel management, equipment maintenance, inventory and purchasing, and management of budget. In collaboration with the Soundstage Studio Manager, interviews, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates undergraduate student employees and graduate assistants, as needed. Works closely with students to make sure the studios are fully supervised for the safety and functionality of all operations.

The Recording Studio Engineer manages and facilitates communication across all creative and technical areas, including communication with faculty, staff and students, in relation to the audio studio and the sound mix/screening room; manages studio schedules in coordination with the Academic Program Coordinator, staff and faculty, and ensures that the space is adequately prepared for use; maintains an orderly, organized, clean and safe environment; ensures users make use of the studio safely; orders sound equipment and software necessary for use in the recording studio and sound mix/screening room, in coordination with the program head and business operations manager; maintains and troubleshoots audio equipment; ensures that the equipment is in working order before and after use; coordinates studio and equipment maintenance and cleaning services as needed.

The Recording Studio Engineer assists with classes and studio audio recording and mixing sessions when needed, conducts best practices for studio/production safety training sessions for faculty, staff and student users and teaches audio recording, mixing sessions, and training sessions.

Required Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. 4 years of relevant experience required. Prior experience with audio engineering, recording, and mixing in the field/industry. Knowledge of audio studio operations, recording sessions, audio equipment including microphones, and audio recording. Knowledge of industry-related hardware and software for recording and mixing in the studio and field. Experience managing purchasing and budgets.

Desired Education & Experience: 8 years of relevant experience. Successful applicants may have educational or practical experience in film production, production management, and space and equipment management. Teaching and course design experience is desired.

Additional Information:

The pay range for this job profile is $53,000.00 - $71,700.00. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
