- Plans, coordinates, and leads daily indoor/outdoor recreational activities.
- Secures and maintains all materials and equipment for assigned programs.
- Supervises youth and adult sports activities and maintains order and discipline. Monitors the performance of volunteers, coaches, Recreation Attendants, and sports officials during these activities.
- Solicits information from participants and communities on recreation needs/desires. Prepares recommendations for new program development or program revisions to meet community needs.
- Responds to comments, questions, and complaints from program participants.
- Collects program applications and fees as needed; prepares receipts and records payments.
- Plans and conducts special events. Solicits volunteer participation in supervising recreational activities and special events.
- Observes necessary precautions to secure the safety of recreation participants and spectators, and renders routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
- Maintains such records as attendance, program activities, volunteer participation, and special events activities. Prepares weekly reports of all activities.
- Prepares promotional materials for the program such as brochures, flyers, and posters.
- Ensures transport of participants to and from recreational activities.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Seattle Parks and Recreation is seeking to fill full-time and part-time benefited Recreation Leader positions based out of our Community Centers. The Community Centers are the connecting agents for our neighborhoods and residents, offering programming 7 days a week for all ages. These positions will support direct program delivery in our community centers, across all recreation program areas. This is a public-facing job with high levels of customer service and engagement. This position will report to the Recreation Center Coordinator.This recruitment process is for two Recreation Leader positions that will work out of our Community Centers.
Community Centers: Recreation Leaders assigned to our Community Centers work to collaboratively develop and implement community recreation programming serving all ages. The position supports the daily customer service needs and operations of the Community Center. The Recreation Leaders work collaboratively with department staff and multiple partners including: the Association Recreation Council, Seattle Public Schools, other City departments, and community groups. These are .75 benefited positions working approximately 30-40 hours per week. The work schedule may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Examples of Duties
Requires one year of experience in a community-based recreation program and an Associate Degree in Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, or a related field (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
One year of experience in planning and implementing a program budget, developing program timelines, and program administration.
Competitive candidates will be able to demonstrate a history of developing programs to meet the needs of all age groups including youth and teens in a diverse urban population.
Demonstrate strong cultural competencies and experience working with culturally specific communities which may include immigrant and first-generation refugee populations and the ability to lead both traditional and nontraditional recreation activities for a variety of age groups.
Ability to speak a second language.
Ability to work in partnership with residents of all ages, businesses, and other community agencies to design, implement, and evaluate programs.
Familiar with computer software products (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and program scheduling software).
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
Will be required to work evenings and weekends.
Requires working outdoors in all types of weather.
Normally required to lift up to 50 pounds.
May require strenuous physical activity.
License, Certification and Other Requirements: Current State of Washington driver's license and/or evidence of equivalent mobility. The full salary range for this position is $20.75 to $33.33 per hour.
