      The City of Rancho Palos Verdes is excited to announce it is hiring a Recreation Program Coordinator to join the Recreation and Parks Department!

      DEPARTMENT
      The Recreation and Parks Department is responsible for managing and operating a comprehensive park system, administering services in the Palos Verdes Nature Preserve and coordinating numerous community activities and events. In addition, the Recreation and Parks Department oversees departmental administration, recreational facilities, programs and classes, special events, the REACH program serving the needs of the developmentally disabled community, support services, and open space management.

      POSITION
      This is a non-exempt, full-time (5/40) position covered by the Rancho Palos Verdes Employees Association. Under general supervision, serves as the lead staff person responsible for coordinating, implementing, and evaluating specific recreational activities. Coordinates specialized recreation programs in the designated area of special events, youth and adult sports, aquatics, youth and teen programs, volunteers, older adults, transportation, cultural arts, and/or registration.

      IDEAL CANDIDATE
      The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic, customer service-oriented team player with knowledge and experience coordinating recreation facilities, rentals and events. A successful incumbent possesses excellent written, oral, and public communication skills and can work independently. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and priorities.

      The ideal candidate must possess the ability to supervise and delegate assignments to staff, as well as mentoring, inspiring and empowering staff. The candidate should have strong analytical and writing skills to allow for interpretation of regulations/policies; as well as excellent interpersonal skills enabling the candidate to work cohesively within workgroups.
      • Plans and coordinates special events within the department.
      • Processes all Special Event Permit Applications, applies for various permits related to hosting programs and events.
      • Prepares and composes a variety of written materials including staff schedules, reports, email correspondence, promotional material, and other documents pertinent to programs and events.
      • Develops and maintains relationships with various community groups and vendors.
      • Assists with monitoring program activities and special events, ensuring activities and events are run smoothly.
      • Responds to questions and resolves complex complaints.
      • Trains, supervises, delegates assignments, and provides guidance and directions to staff pertaining to programs and events.
      • Coordinates and monitors contract services provided by outside organizations for programs and events;
      • Exercises independent judgment and puts practices in place to ensure the health and safety of participants and staff during programs and events;
      • Assists in budget preparation and monitors budget expenditures in specified areas;
      • Prepares requisitions, tracks purchase orders and submits invoices for payment;
      • Coordinates booking of events and programs, related meetings, equipment, services, and reserving space;
      • Monitors program activities and special events
      • Attracts vendors for programs and events; creates, reviews, and approves vendor applications and performs associated tasks.
      • Inspects facilities before, during and after a program or event;
      • Remains accessible during assigned activities, responding to and resolving event or program problems or complaints from vendors, clients, and patrons, maintaining a high level of customer service;
      • Performs other duties as assigned.
      Knowledge of:
      • Procedures and methods related to a variety of recreational, special events, older adult programs, cultural arts (which may include ceramics, visual arts, and/or performing arts), aquatics and recreational facilities maintenance and operations; safe operations of equipment and material for related divisions; basic principles and practices of recreation administration; recreational, cultural arts and social needs of the community; modern office practices, procedures, methods and equipment.
      Ability to:
      • Work effectively with a team of recreation professions in a professional setting; possess a community public service orientation and ability to provide outstanding programs and services in line with department and City mission and goals; understand community needs in a variety of recreation areas and evaluate activities according to those needs; keep organized files and maintain consistent records; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; follow directions from a supervisor; accept constructive criticism; and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
      Education and Experience:
      Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
      • Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field with one year of experience planning, organizing or conducting recreation programs, physical education or related field is required.
      • Supervisory experience is highly desirable.
      Licenses and Certifications:
      • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License by time of appointment.
