      IMPORTANT: Manhattan Parks and Recreation provides Lifeguarding certifications for all interested applicants. Please apply by submitting an application, and you will be contacted for class scheduling. Applicants who do not pass the lifeguarding course, may be eligible for swim instructor or cashier positions depending on qualifications and availability.


      Lifeguard staff will serve to facilitate an excellent aquatic experience for customers at one of the three Manhattan waterparks by enforcing rules, enacting Emergency Action Plans (EAP), and taking care of injured, ill, or distressed customers by using trained skills. Staff will be paid competitively and may be eligible for promotion/transfer depending on performance.


      Job Duties

      • Provides excellent customer service and possesses a service philosophy which reflects the mission for the Parks and Recreation Department.

      • Patrols or monitors swimming areas from designated positions on foot or while sitting on approved lifeguard stands to detect hazards, disturbances, or safety infractions.

      • Rescues distressed swimmers, using rescue techniques and equipment.

      • Communicates orally and in writing with customers, other lifeguards, and supervisors.

      • Identifies, examines, and cares for injured or ill persons by administering first aid or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, when necessary, uses training, medical supplies, and other equipment.

      • Notifies, instructs, and corrects customer behavior that is inconsistent with safety procedures in a fair, timely, and polite manner.

      • Carries out all procedures exactly as described by the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in times of emergency or crisis. EAP training will be provided by Manhattan Parks and Recreation.

      • Completes forms and reports accurately and in detail to document various aquatic facility activities and incidents.

      • Completes all assigned facility maintenance and cleaning duties as directed by supervisors.

      • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional working relationships with others; individually and in a team environment.

      • Works in a team composed of other Lifeguards, Head Lifeguards, Assistant Managers, and Managers; learns, carries out, and enforces Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP); makes decisions quickly in order to respond to potential hazards or emergency situations.

      • Other duties as assigned.


      Work performed at one of three outdoor aquatic facilities: City Park Waterpark, CiCo Waterpark, or Northview Waterpark; work performed outside in extreme heat which could expose the staff to various outside atmospheric conditions; noise level and activity level will be varied.


      To perform the essential functions of this job, staff may be required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, handle, feel, speak, hear, climb stairs, push, pull, or lift up to 50 pounds.

      Requirements

      Required Knowledge & Skills

      • First aid, water rescue, and CPR methods as taught in the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification class.

      • Must pass Lifeguard, First Aid, CPR and AED Certification.


      Lifeguard applicants are required to complete the following pre-requisites prior to taking the lifeguard certification course:

      • Perform a 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted, and swimming goggles are allowed.

      • Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes without support and without stopping. When treading, only the legs can be used.

      • 1 minute and 40 second timed event, where the participant will start in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to the bottom of the facility pool to retrieve a 10-pound brick, at which point they will return to the surface and swim the brick back 20 yards to the starting point.


      Preferred Knowledge & Skills

      • Lifeguard applicants will have background as a swim lessons instructor or swim team coach; teach swim lessons.

      • Certified Lifeguard; Certified in First Aid, CPR, and AED.


      Other Information

      • **Applicants must pass a background check.

      • Staff may be asked to work weekends and holidays.

      • Waterparks are open on Memorial Day weekend until no later than Labor Day.

      • **Staff will be required to attend in-service training.
