      The Mission of the Department of Public Instruction:
      The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) is charged with implementing the state's public school laws for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public schools at the direction of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and State Board of Education.

      The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is seeking applicants for a Criminal Justice Specialist/Investigator II (Working Title: Regional School Safety Specialist) for our Center for Safer Schools.

      The Center for Safer Schools is responsible for The N.C. Center for Safer Schools is designed to address the problem of school and youth-related violence and serve as a customer-focused information center for research, training, and technical assistance related to school safety, crisis prevention and response.


      This position is responsible for The School Safety Specialist II will assist district school safety directors in their regions by providing technical assistance, training and resources needed in relations to school safety. Also, to ensure that a comprehensive school safety plan is developed, updated, submitted, and implemented. This position will develop and maintains relationships that results in collaborative efforts and information sharing to promote the Center. This position is a liaison and support between NC DPI and school safety directors.

      Extensive regional travel up to 75% of time, with some overnights.

      • Demonstrated experience working in School Safety within a school environment.
      • Demonstrated experience working in criminal justice and/or law enforcement procedure, terminology, and/or policies and practices.
      • Demonstrated experience interpreting, applying, and/or communicating statutory regulations.
      • Demonstrated experience conducting and/or leading trainings.

      MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

      • Knowledge of school/youth violence; prevention, intervention, and response programs for addressing critical incidents at schools; and prevention research methodology.
      • Experience in school safety.
      • Working knowledge for conducting policy analysis, evaluation practices and trends impacting school and youth-related violence prevention.

      ADDITIONAL EXPECTATIONS OF THE POSITION:

      The chosen candidate must live within 65 miles of one of the following counties within the Southeast Region as listed below:

      Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, Scotland, Hoke, Robeson, Bladen, Columbus, Cumberland, and Sampson

      Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of administrative and/or technical experience in criminal justice or law enforcement as it relates to the area of assignment, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
