      Position Summary

      As a member of the Toronto General Emergency Department, the REGISTERED PRACTICAL NURSE practices in accordance with relevant legislation/standards, the UHN Professional Practice Model and the mission and vision of nursing at the UHN to provide compassionate, collaborative, and competent care, while meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the profession. The RPN will work in our ambulatory care area (Rapid Assessment Zone, Ambulatory care areas) providing care to lower acuity patients who are most likely to be discharged home.

      Duties

      • Applying knowledge of nursing process, as it relates to scope of practice, to achieve identified patient goals when overall care needs are less ACUTE, outcomes are predictable and risk of negative outcomes is low.
      • Identifies and recognizes abnormal or unusual patient responses and consults and collaborates with the Registered Nurse or other members of the health care team appropriately, and when necessary, safely transfers care to the RN when necessary.
      • Provides aspects of care for highly complex patients when in close consultation with the Registered Nurse directing the patient's care.
      • Ensuring practice is consistent with professional standards and the ethical framework as outlined by the College of Nurses of Ontario and the UHN policy and procedure.
      • Demonstrating commitment to professional life long learning by participating in continuing education activities to meet the needs of the patient population served and the standards of the profession.
      • Performing reflective practice, analyzing and evaluating nursing knowledge and modifying practice accordingly to improve the quality of nursing and patient care.
      • Performing cross-functional and other responsibilities, as assigned and/or requested.
