      The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System.       Job Description

      The Regulatory and Transmission Services Team provides regulatory, change and process support to transmission projects. We also lead the implementation of new or modified rules and regulations in applicable AESO processes.

      Reporting to the Manager, Regulatory and Transmission Services, the Regulatory Analyst is primarily accountable for preparing needs approval applications for transmission projects. As key members of the cross-functional project team, the Regulatory Analyst provides regulatory interpretation and advice, reviews technical engineering documents, and supports the AESO’s stakeholder engagement programs from project initiation through to regulatory approval.

      At the AESO, projects are executed in a matrix structure, and the Regulatory Analyst is assigned to multiple project execution teams. The position coordinates cross functionally with other technical specialists within the Grid Reliability business unit, including project management and engineering disciplines, and is also engaged with team members in business groups that specialize in tariffs, forecasting, legal, and stakeholder relations. This role also communicates with external parties, such as TFOs, DFOs, Market Participants and other stakeholders.

      Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

      • Complete regulatory assessments and determine the appropriate application filing type for each project.

      • Prepare and assist in the submission of needs approval applications for both System and Connection projects.

      • Review and evaluate supporting technical materials to ensure compliance with AUC and ISO rules, regulations and AESO’s business practices.

      • Collaborate with subject matter experts to enhance the quality and presentation of application inputs to ensure accuracy, completeness and compliance.

      • Develop and maintain a clear understanding of the Alberta regulatory framework for electricity transmission projects.

      • Monitor and assess the impact of any regulatory changes or AUC decisions to applicable AESO processes and procedures.

      • Perform regulatory risk assessments including proposing suitable controls and mitigation strategies to the identified risks.

      • Prepare, maintain, and refine templates in adherence with established AESO processes.

      What you’ll bring to us:

      • Bachelor’s degree (Engineering, Science, Law, Business, or other related fields). Graduate degree will be considered an asset.

      • Minimum five years hands-on regulatory experience; preferably in the electricity and power sector.

      • Understanding of the Alberta electricity industry, legislation and regulatory structure.

      • Strong skills in collecting and analyzing and evaluating complex technial information, and drawing logical conclusions.

      • Ability to identify risks and arrive at mitigation strategies and solutions to the risks.

      • Demonstrated ability to contribute to and influence team decisions.

      • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

      • Strong technical writing ability that conveys intended messages with clarity and precision.

      • Driven to personally achieve quality results in a timely and effective manner.
