      The Ministry of Agriculture and Food is responsible for the production, marketing, processing and merchandising of agriculture, food and seafood products.

      The Corporate Policy & Priorities Branch supports the operations of the overall ministry by providing services including policy development, legislative services, economic analysis, statistical reporting, emergency management leadership and climate change expertise.

      The Sector Insights & Corporate Initiatives Unit provides economic expertise and statistical analysis to inform ministry policy and program development. The Unit compiles and disseminates provincial agriculture, food and seafood sector information and statistics related to production, processing and trade. The Unit is also responsible for corporate priority initiatives related to evaluation, digital strategy, and data management. The Unit supports the ministry’s operational areas with program design and delivery including planning, reporting, performance management and evaluation.

      The development and implementation of a ministry-wide Program Operation Data System (PODS) solution started in early 2023. The purpose of PODS is to allow for the collection, management, and reporting of data on agriculture programs and their clients, across main program delivery areas.

      The Research Officer is responsible for planning, designing and executing data extraction from PODS and developing and implementing data validation from external sources to provide analysis and reporting to ministry executive, to the federal government, and any other analysis and reporting needs such as program monitoring and evaluation. The role may expand to provide data analyst support for a broader range of ministry data, through a data lakehouse or data analytics platform.


      Job Requirements:

      • Bachelor’s Degree in statistics, mathematics, economics, public or business administration, computer science or other data analysis related field.
      • One year of related experience including all of the following:
        - Designing and conducting quantitative research using data analysis software and languages such as R, Python or SQL.
        - Using technology to support users to visualize and manipulate data results, such as Power BI or Tableau software.
        - Working within tight time constraints to meet deadlines with high quality work.

      Preference may be given to applicants with the following:

      • Experience in survey design, including use of software tools to support survey design and delivery.
      • Experience working in a public service environment with a wide range of clients and stakeholders.

      About this Position:

      We currently have one (1) Temporary Full Time vacancy, for approximately one year. A permanent appointment may result from this temporary appointment.

      This position may be based in Victoria, Abbotsford, or Kelowna. Other locations may be considered.

      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work some days at home subject to an approved telework agreement.

      An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and/or permanent vacancies.
