      Department Overview:

      The Precision Dairy Nutrition Lab focuses on using data analysis and animal trials to identify individual differences in animals that might impact feed efficiency and productivity. Goals are to identify factors that improve animal health, productivity, farm sustainability, decrease animal greenhouse gas emissions, and improve overall nutrition in dairy animals.

      Schedule can be flexible around academic commitments. Main focus of hours will be on M/T/W. Opportunites for increased hours will be available during the summer.

      Salary/Wage Range:

      Hourly $15.00 to $15.00

      Position Summary/Job Duties:

      This position provides the opportunity for an undergraduate student to gain on-farm and laboratory experience working in dairy nutrition research. Training will be provided, and responsibilities will evolve with experience, availability, and willingness to learn.

      Required Duties (2-3 hours weekly): This position requires the availability to conduct a minimum of 1 of the following sampling times (2-3 times monthly) at the PDS location. Actual time at the farm will range between 15 and 60 minutes, but pay will be a minimum of 2 hours. Times below are estimates and include travel time to and from the farm from a near-campus location.       Tuesday 2-4:30AM
      Tuesday 5-7:30PM
      Tuesday 10PM-12:30AM
      Wednesday 5-7:30AM

      Additional Duties:

      On-farm:

      • Operating precision technologies to collect and record experimental data.

      • Helping obtain and process samples of feed and animal origin.

      On-campus:

      • Collecting and recording experimental data.

      • Milk, feed, animal tissue, and blood sampling and analyses.

      • Data entry.

      • General laboratory maintenance and cleaning tasks.

      • Assisting staff and scientists at the center when necessary.

      Qualifications:

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      • Must have a valid driver’s license. Authorization will be obtained for use of federal government vehicles if needed.

      • Willingness to work with dairy cattle (training will be provided).

      Physical Demands

      Ability to work standing for periods of time and frequent bending, twisting, shoveling, or lifting (up to 50 pounds). Please consider any sensitivities to dust or other allergens associated with animals or the outdoors.
