      GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

      The Neil and Elise Wallace STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation is committed to advancing medical education, patient safety, and healthcare outcomes through cutting-edge applications of medical simulation technologies supported by innovative curricula, contemporary educational methodologies, continuous improvement, and rigorous, multidisciplinary research.

      The Research Assistant II provides assistance on simulation, technology and clinical research studies following established policies and procedures. The RA II may be responsible for the following activities: recruiting and evaluating subjects for studies; collecting and managing data; scheduling research sessions and meetings; consenting participants; collecting research data; developing study materials and databases; supporting data analysis; preparing, writing and submitting research grants, manuscripts, and IRB protocols. In this role, the RA II reports directly to the Director of Research and Innovation at the STRATUS Center.

      PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Coordinate the implementation, both internally and externally, of simulation, technology and/or clinical research studies. This includes supporting research operations and coordinating activities with multisite national and international collaborators.
      • Screen eligible research subjects, ensuring they meet appropriate criteria, and make an independent judgment as to the suitability of their participation; Per protocol instruction, conducts telephone, virtual or in-person interviews, schedules study times/ access and meetings.
      • Work with the Director of Research and Innovation to develop and implement participant recruitment strategies.
      • Collect data and develop, organize and maintain study databases; may be required to input data, perform data analysis and run various analyses and reports; perform data validation and quality control.
      • Maintain subjects’ records as part of the record-keeping function.
      • Manage digital technology devices, set up experiments and audio-video systems, and instruct participants on how to use devices.
      • Perform video observations and event/behavior annotations.
      • Develop and implement new research protocols including design, data collection systems, and institutional review board (IRB) applications.
      • Interact with subjects with regards to studies, including subject education, procedural instruction, consent, and follow-up. May serve as a liaison between subject and PI.
      • Answer any phone calls or email inquiries regarding study protocols; refers participants when appropriate to PI or other research staff
      • Perform literature searches and conduct systematic reviews of the literature, as appropriate.
      • Assist PI or others with preparation for presentations and written published articles.
      • Use and run simulators and simulation equipment. This includes anatomic models and task trainers, high-fidelity computer-based simulators and virtual reality trainers.
      • Expertly operate audiovisual systems and possess the ability to train others in the use of audiovisual, research software and hardware systems, including audiovisual system includes startup, utilizing all features of a given system, troubleshooting issues as they arise and performing updates as necessary.
      • Responsible for training and orienting new research staff.
      • Other duties as assigned.

      SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

      • Good oral and written communication skills.
      • Knowledge of research protocols.
      • Basic knowledge of computer programming, database management, and data analytics
      • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.
      • Careful attention to detail.
      • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and respect for subjects’ rights and individual needs.
      • Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment; able to work evenings/weekends on an as-needed basis.

      Bachelor degree required. Masters’ degree in healthcare-related fields (e.g., MSc, MPH) or an MD with strong quantitative skills preferred.

      One year of research expeirence.
