      UE07: £36,333.00 - £43,155.00 Per Annum
College of Science & Engineering / School of Engineering / Institute for Energy Systems
Fixed Term Contract: Full time - 35 Hours per Week
Fixed Term Contract Duration: 36 Months

The Electrical Power Conversion Group, within the Institute for Energy Systems at the University of Edinburgh, are excited to be able to offer a 36 Month Post-Doctoral Research Associate Position working on Hybrid Distribution Transformer designs as part of the EPSRC funded GiFHT-4-eGrids project.

      The Opportunity:

The GiFHT-4-eGrids project will focus on developing Hybrid Distribution Transformer, specifically retrofitting existing distribution transformer, to unlock further capacity in distribution networks in the context of higher penetration of distributed generation and responsive loads. Hybrid Distribution Transformers represent a special class of transformer resulting from the combination of a conventional low-frequency transformer with one or more electronic converters, enabling flexible power flows and improved power quality to ultimately unlock further capacity in distribution networks in the context of higher penetration of distributed generation and responsive loads.

This project will involve designing and testing power electronics systems, from converter design to control systems together with integration with magnetic cores. The main deliverable for this project consists in delivering a working prototype in the kVA range in addition to publication in high ranked journals and conferences. This project is conducted in collaboration with the University of Newcastle which will be developing their own bespoke hybrid transformer prototype in parallel.

The successful candidate will work closely with the research team of the Electrical Power Conversion group at Edinburgh (including members of academic staff, post-doctoral researchers and PhD students) as well as project collaborators at Newcastle University, two institutions with a long and strong track record in scientific research publications in power electronics and thriving collaboration with industrial partners both in large organisations and start-ups.

Your skills and attributes for success:

      • A PhD in electrical engineering or a related field.
      • Experience in power electronics, high-voltage & high-current equipment, simulation tools, and enthusiastic for experimental work – an aspect our team particularly value in our research for better power electronics systems.
      • Good communication and teamwork skills.
      • A strong interest in renewable energy and smart grid technologies
