      Background

This one-year post provides a unique opportunity to deliver research in the area of health economics to quantify the primary health care resource use and costs associated with musculoskeletal pain in children and adolescents.

CAM-PAIN is a 4-year project funded by the National Institute for Applied Research (NIHR) Programme Grants for Applied Health Research funding stream and is led by the Centre for Musculoskeletal Research, Keele University. The health economics component is led by the Health Economics Unit at the University of Birmingham. This work builds on a long-standing collaboration between the two universities.

The overall project aim is to determine the longer-term outcomes of child/adolescent musculoskeletal pain in primary care by describing overall prognosis, identifying prognostic factors, and estimating health service costs of children/adolescents presenting with new musculoskeletal pain. The project uses data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) dataset, a national UK electronic health record database of anonymised routinely recorded, longitudinal, primary care information. The health economics component will use the dataset to calculate average resource use, apply unit costs and calculate average healthcare costs and the overall NHS cost burden. Statistical analysis will also explore factors associated with higher costs, for example, site of the pain.

      • Conducting multivariable regression analysis using generalised linear modelling to explore covariates associated with higher costs.
      • Contributing to dissemination of the CAM-PAIN project including writing papers, documents, reports and others, and working directly with the CAM-PAIN team in Keele.

      • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
