      Description:

      Applications are invited for appointment as a Photonics Research Associate in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering, at the University of Toronto. This is a full-time on-site position to work in the Amr S Helmy group, under Prof. Helmy’s supervision and conduct research centered on lab work in field of ultrafast quantum photonics. This position does not support remote duties of any sort and will be fully in the lab.

      The successful candidate will be talented, self-driven and motivated as well as have a successful record to architect, simulate, and validate novel ultrafast devices and subsystems and characterize their performance. The candidate should have extensive experience on (a) designing and building photonic systems and circuits; (b) performing optical device characterization and microwave measurements; (c) providing research support and mentorship to other research group members. This team develops cutting-edge technologies used in wide range of products and its team members have ample opportunities to grow their technical knowledge and complex problem-solving skills.

      Duties:

      • Serve as sub-group leader within the Helmy group on ultrafast quantum photonics research topics.
      • Interact with external partners to understand of their technical requirements and effectively translate these requirements into research projects.
      • Attends meetings and present research
      • Co-develop proposals for extramural funding
      • Deliver high-performance, stable and repeatable characterization test beds.
      • Purchase, maintain, and organize research laboratory equipment
      • Provides functional and administrative supervision over graduate students and post-docs.
      • Lead and document weekly team conference calls to coordinate Research & Development activities and achieve project targets
      • Develop and execute research vision with PI to achieve research goals

      Qualifications:

      • PhD in Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of research and work experience in integrated ultrafast photonics.
      • Solid grasp of photonics, electromagnetics, semiconductor physics, and ultrafast optoelectronics fundamentals.
      • Minimum eight (8) years of experience with photonic device/circuit characterization using optical test equipment, ultrafast measurement techniques, as well as high-speed characterization.
      • Good programming ability with Python, Matlab, or similar language
      • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team on industrial collaborative research.
      • Demonstrated leadership and team management abilities as candidate will be responsible for coordinating several concurrent research projects with multiple personnel including students and trainees.
      • Experience working with students and trainees in both theoretical and experimental techniques, providing research project support and trouble-shooting experiments for students and trainees.
      • Strong communication skills and experience preparing manuscripts for submission to peer reviewed scientific journals and research proposals to granting agencies and prospective industry partners.
