- Support the writing and editing needs of the Burma program, this will include developmental editing to proofreading.
- Support USIP-funded researchers to navigate the Institutional Review Board (IRB) process.
- Participate in meetings in which USIP sets its research agenda including identifying potential research partners, reviewing research proposals, and developing requests for proposals (RFPs).
- Manage M&E frameworks for up to 5 USIP projects.
- Work with the USIP M&E advisor to identify strategies and opportunities for collecting data on project indicators.
- Support data collection processes, including exploration of data collection methods, and tool development and deployment. Given the highly insecure operating environment in Burma, this will require a high level of adaptability, creativity, and risk management.
- Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or humanities.
- Three (3) or more years of relevant work experience in a similar position related to research, writing and analysis and/or monitoring and evaluation in the public sector, journalism and/or peacebuilding.
- Three (3) or more years of experience working on Burma and familiarity with the country’s conflict dynamics.
- Strong English writing and editing skills are essential.
- Qualitative data collection skills are valued, including related to outcome harvesting, interview methods, most significant change analysis, and other methods appropriate for a dynamic and insecure operating environment.
- Skills in quantitative methods are also valued, including skills in coding surveys and statistical analysis (familiarity with R or STATA is preferred).
- Experience in project management is desirable.
- Demonstrated understanding of conflict-sensitivity, gender-sensitivity and do-no-harm principles and practice.
- Knowledge of languages spoken in Burma preferred.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Strong judgement and discretion in complex environments.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly MS Word, MS Outlook, and MS Excel. Previous experience with database usage is preferred.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships and strong interpersonal skills, including cross-cultural communication.

Job Brief
The Research Officer, Burma will support USIP’s Burma Program in two main areas: (1) Research, and (2) Monitoring, Evaluation & Learning. USIP’s Burma program supports a range of research products and forms, including short op/ed-style publications, briefing papers for the US Government, and academic-style publications, among various others. The Research Officer will work closely with USIP’s field-based M&E advisor, program managers, and program officers on MEL strategy and implementation. The position reports to USIP's Burma Country Director. This is a part-time term contract position based in Bangkok, Thailand (expected to work 20 hours per week). The contract can be renewed pending funding, performance, and business needs. This is a fixed-term Personal Services Contractor position.
