      Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

      The Department of Health Behavior is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Founded in 1943, the Department develops, and disseminates knowledge and interventions that promotes the health of individuals and communities. The Department’s 25 faculty members have backgrounds in behavioral science, health education, international health, social and cognitive psychology, medicine, medical sociology, and communications, and are united by their commitment to the disciplines of public health together with the social and behavioral sciences.

      Position Summary

      Dr. Clare Barrington in the Department of Health Behavior at the UNC Gillings School of Public Health seeks a full- time EHRA Non-Faculty Project Manager. Dr. Barrington’s research focuses on social determinants of chronic disease globally and in the US. She conducts formative research to inform intervention design and implementation studies to determine outcomes and understand processes of impact

      The Project Manager will coordinate operations of multiple research projects, including two NIH-funded studies in the Dominican Republic focused on understanding and improving HIV care and treatment outcomes and overall wellbeing among vulnerable populations. They will also support development of new proposals related to HIV prevention and care in Guatemala and other settings. The position requires training and experience in public health research, understanding of research and evaluations designs, and the ability to implement multiple concurrent research tasks in English and Spanish (e.g. proposal development, data collection, manuscript preparation, community engagement). Strong interpersonal and facilitation skills (in English and Spanish) are also needed.

      The Project Manager will be an active member of a vibrant, interdisciplinary, transnational research team comprised of academic and community collaborators. Our team is committed to providing professional development for project managers, including opportunities to lead and collaborate on scholarly dissemination, presenting at conferences, and obtaining formal and informal training while in the position.

      Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

      Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution. May require terminal degree and licensure.

      Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

      * This position requires strong public health research skills, including reviewing scientific literature, creating data collection instruments, managing databases, facilitating IRB applications and regulatory documents, and developing study protocols.
      * This position requires management skills including a demonstrated capacity to independently manage multiple tasks associated with multiple, integrated projects.
      * The Project Manager must have outstanding organizational and management skills.
      * This position requires excellent interpersonal, cross-cultural communication skills and an ability to take initiative on all aspects of research.
      * Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken)

      Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

      * A Masters degree in Public Health, Public Policy, Anthropology, Epidemiology, or another relevant field is preferred
      * At least 3 years experience is preferred
      * Experience with data analysis and drafting scholarly dissemination is preferred
      * Experience design and implementing evaluations for public health programs is preferred
      * Experience living or working in Latin America is preferred.
