      The Tearney Lab (www.tearneylab.org) at the Massachusetts General Hospital is a multidisciplinary research laboratory that invents, designs, and validates innovative optical diagnostic imaging technologies for use in clinical studies. A Research Software Engineer is being sought to join the Tearney Lab’s Engineering Department. This candidate will implement, test, and deploy novel and customized medical imaging device applications and post processing solutions. These tools will be used to analyze and visualize optical imaging and microscopy datasets, from both clinical and biological experiments. This candidate will also work with researchers to develop algorithms to automatically diagnose and segment datasets for faster evaluation. Core skills and capabilities in the technologies of C/C++, VisualStudio, Qt, and version control are required. Additional skills and experience with Intel Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP), MATLAB, ImageJ, LabView, embedded operating systems, Arduino, Machine Learning, and GPU programming are helpful. In this position, the Software Engineer will develop standalone medical imaging device applications according to an industry standard design control process.

      PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Programming standalone applications capable of data acquisition, image reconstruction, display, analysis, and storage in C/C++ and LabVIEW
      • Validation and debugging of developed software applications
      • Develop algorithms for feature detection and image segmentation
      • Document all software according to best design control practices within an existing version control database
      • Develop and translate algorithms and programs written in Matlab or LabVIEW to C/C++ based programs
      • Performs other duties or special projects that are Department specific and that are appropriate to this level of position.

      SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

      • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team of program managers, scientists, engineers, clinical regulatory staff, and physicians
      • Ability to diagnose and solve software problems
      • Ability to develop standalone acquisitions in C/C++
      • Ability to develop software for data acquisition and post processing
      • Understanding of image datatypes and metadata
      • Ability to interface with third party hardware and DLLs
      • Understanding of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, graphics, statistics, engineering tools and programming
      • Skill in technical writing

      WORKING CONDITIONS:

      • Office/research laboratory environment
      • May work in a research laboratory or clinical site with potential exposure to biological agents, e.g., blood-borne pathogens, hazardous electrical energy, e.g. high voltage, optical equipment, e.g. lasers, or mechanical equipment, e.g. prototyping equipment
      • Occasional lifting of heavy objects, typically not exceeding 75 pounds/person may be requested

      Education:

      • BS degree required - Software Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or related engineering discipline

      Experience:

      • One year experience in building and debugging software projects required
      • Knowledge/experience in machine learning and version control software preferred
